Sourcing PPS multifilament yarn from China

PPS multifilament yarn from China carries 0% UK duty across the relevant heading 5402 lines. The code depends on texturing, twist and whether the yarn is single or folded; this heading excludes sewing thread and retail-packed yarn. Check fibre information and finish chemistry before sale. Zero duty, with classification by construction

Heading 5402 covers synthetic filament yarn other than sewing thread, not put up for retail sale. For PPS multifilament yarn, the relevant branches distinguish textured yarn, low-twist single yarn, higher-twist single yarn and multiple or cabled yarn. These are construction-dependent alternatives, not interchangeable codes.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the relevant lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. Import VAT is separate; see UK import duty and VAT.

Obtain the polymer composition, continuous-filament construction, texturing status, twist and ply details before confirming the commodity code. Compare the related spun PPS yarn guide if the supplier offers yarn spun from staple fibres rather than continuous filaments.

Specify the PPS yarn and its working conditions

Write polyphenylene sulphide into the specification and state whether blends are acceptable. Specify linear density, filament count, single or folded construction, twist direction and level, tenacity, elongation, finish content, package dimensions and net yarn weight. Agree tolerances and test methods before approving the sample.

For yarn intended for hot filtration or other industrial textiles, describe the actual temperature cycle, exposure chemicals and weaving process. Ask for shrinkage and retained-strength results under agreed conditions. Test the yarn in your process rather than accepting a general heat-resistance claim for the polymer.

Textile labelling rules in Great Britain require fibre-content information. Confirm the appropriate fibre description before sale rather than treating the supplier's abbreviation as a complete label. REACH restrictions can limit or prohibit substances in articles, so request finish and additive information and assess applicable restrictions.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 50 kg of untwisted PPS multifilament yarn, illustrative order and values under 5402 49 00 90, invoiced at £2,600 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,800, so it is £760. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity and construction: compare the shipment with the approved sample and composition report; check filament count, ply and twist against the order.

Lot performance: test linear density, tenacity, elongation and shrinkage on samples from different packages; match reports to the shipped lot.

Packages and running: check net yarn weight, winding build, crushed tubes, loose loops and broken filaments; unwind samples and run a weaving trial.

Traceability and finish: match package and carton lot references to the packing list; check finish consistency, contamination and fibre information. Agree the sampling scope using quality inspection explained.

What goes wrong

A supplier may quote spun PPS yarn when the buyer needs continuous multifilament yarn. Matching the polymer name does not resolve differences in construction, twist or running behaviour. Mixed lots, broken filaments and uneven winding can cause processing stops and inconsistent fabric.

Heat-resistance claims also fail when the test conditions differ from the buyer's process. Keep an approved reference package, require lot-specific results and trial the yarn before bulk conversion. Agree how failed packages or lots will be identified and handled.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on PPS multifilament yarn from China?

The relevant heading 5402 lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff record. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is listed. Import VAT is separate.

Which commodity code covers untwisted PPS multifilament yarn?

5402 49 00 90 is the relevant candidate for non-textured single PPS yarn, untwisted or with a twist not exceeding 50 turns per metre. Confirm the construction and packing before declaring it.

Is PPS multifilament yarn the same as spun PPS yarn?

No. Ask whether the yarn consists of continuous filaments or is spun from staple fibres. Specify the construction explicitly and compare the supplier's sample with your intended process.

What should I test before accepting PPS multifilament yarn?

Check composition, linear density, filament count, twist, tenacity, elongation and package weight. For hot-service applications, agree shrinkage and retained-strength tests under your actual exposure conditions.
