Duty and classification for powder coating guns

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 7 October 2026, heading 8424 covers mechanical appliances for spraying liquids or powders, including spray guns. The selected lines carry 0% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension listed. Manual and automatic guns share the spray-gun line; a complete installation or separately supplied part needs its own classification review.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches a fluorinated greenhouse gas import control to these lines and an export restriction for goods for torture and repression to the gun and other-appliance lines. The parts line also carries a restriction concerning ozone-depleting substances. Confirm the applicable requirements with your customs broker using the actual specification; these tariff flags do not establish that a powder coating gun is prohibited.

Confirm the commodity code from the gun, controller, feed equipment and packing list before ordering. The table shows manual and automatic guns separately under the same code. For the wider heading, see sandblasting cabinets.

Charging system, powder feed and intended environment

Specify manual or automatic operation, charging method, controller adjustments, powder compatibility, nozzle pattern, powder feed arrangement and compressed-air connections. Name the supplied gun cable, powder hose, earth lead and replacement wear parts. Agree a sample trial using your powder and representative workpieces, including recessed areas and colour changes.

For guns intended for explosive atmospheres, the importer must ensure that the product meets essential health and safety requirements and undergoes appropriate conformity procedures. Ask the supplier to identify the intended environment and provide model-specific conformity evidence for the gun and associated controller. Arrange a testing and certification review before accepting the configuration.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 powder coating gun kits with controllers and powder feed equipment under 8424 20 00 00, invoiced at £28,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,000, so it is £6,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Powder delivery: check stable feed, trigger response and spray pattern using the agreed powder; inspect recessed areas and compare the result with the approved sample.

Earthing and cables: check the supplied earth lead, connections, cable condition and test records. HSE identifies good equipment earthing and electrical maintenance as measures to reduce electric shock risk.

Cleaning and spares: dismantle the powder path as instructed, check access for colour changes and confirm that replacement nozzles, electrodes and seals fit the delivered model.

Configuration and packing: match gun, controller, connectors and documents to the approved specification. Check hoses for crushing and gun bodies for cracks on arrival. Use quality inspection to record discrepancies.

What goes wrong

Look for pulsing powder feed, uneven deposits, poor coverage in recesses and residual powder contaminating a colour change. A demonstration on a flat panel can miss these problems. Repeat the agreed trial on representative workpieces and record the powder, air settings and controller settings.

A replacement gun can arrive with incompatible cable connectors or a different controller interface. Fix the configuration in the purchase specification and require approval before substitutions. Check the conformity evidence against the delivered configuration rather than accepting a document for a different gun.
