Sourcing poultry feed premixes from China

Selected poultry premix lines carry £19 to £85 per 1,000 kg, or 8% for the listed pea-protein mineral and vitamin preparation; milk-rich recipes can cost more in duty. Confirm feed-additive authorisation requirements for Great Britain with the competent authority. Check the full formulation and import controls before ordering. Duty follows the complete formulation

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 November 2026, heading 2309 covers preparations used in animal feeding, including premixes. The selected starch-based lines carry £19, £46 or £85 per 1,000 kg. The listed pea-protein mineral and vitamin preparation carries 8%. Its code is specific to the stated high-protein pea product, rather than a general vitamin-premix code. Other milk-containing formulations can carry higher specific duties.

The selected lines list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The soya-protein suspension under 2309 90 31 99 and astaxanthin-preparation suspension under 2309 90 41 89 exclude mixtures containing those products. Do not apply them automatically to a poultry premix. Confirm the commodity code using the complete formulation, carrier, starch, sugars and milk-product analysis. See the wider animal-feed guide for other preparations.

The tariff attaches veterinary, organic and waste import controls to these rows, plus seal-product controls to the starch-based rows. It also lists waste export controls. For animal-derived formulations subject to veterinary checks, pre-notification uses IPAFFS. Before shipment from China, ask your customs broker to confirm admissibility, country and plant eligibility, certificates, health-entry documents and entry arrangements. Confirm applicable organic, seal-product and waste requirements with the broker rather than treating every attached control as applicable to every premix.

Specify the poultry ration and premix carrier

State whether the premix is for broilers, layers or breeders, the feeding stage, and the intended inclusion rate in the finished ration. Specify each vitamin and trace element by identity, chemical form and concentration. List enzymes, microorganisms, amino acids and any other additives separately. Agree the carrier, particle size, bulk density, moisture, mixing uniformity, storage conditions and shelf life.

Ask the competent authority to confirm feed-business registration and Great Britain additive authorisation requirements for your importing operation. Check each additive against its intended poultry use. If an additive performs more than one function, separate authorisation is required for each function. Certain imported premixtures also require a manufacturer’s representative in Great Britain; establish whether your formulation needs one before ordering.

Ask for the signed formulation, batch analysis and proposed label before approving production. Declare animal-derived carriers and organic claims explicitly. Ask the relevant organic authority or control body to confirm importer establishment and certification requirements. The organic inspection certificate is issued by the exporter’s control body in the exporting country; confirm the applicable certificate requirements before shipment. Use testing and certification support to agree the laboratory brief.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 12 tonnes of a poultry mineral and vitamin preparation of pea protein exceeding 65% protein on a dry-weight basis, subject to confirmation of classification under 2309 90 96 39, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £33,500. Duty at 8% is £2,680. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £36,180, so it is £7,236. Import taxes total £9,916; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,680 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the poultry category, feeding stage, carrier and additive identities to the approved formulation; investigate substitutions before accepting the lot.

Potency and uniformity: independently sample across the lot and test agreed vitamins, trace elements and relevant enzyme activity; compare results with the contracted concentrations and mixing specification.

Condition: on arrival, check bags for moisture damage, broken seals, caking, unusual odour and visible segregation; keep affected bags separate pending assessment.

Documents: match batch references, manufacturing and expiry information, inclusion instructions and analysis reports to the shipment. Confirm applicable feed declarations and clearance documents before release.

What goes wrong

A correct average analysis can hide uneven distribution between bags. Different particle sizes can segregate during handling, while moisture can cause caking and reduce usable potency. Agree representative sampling and arrival testing through the quality inspection guide, and retain loading samples for comparison.

A changed carrier can alter both the mixing behaviour and tariff classification. A replacement additive may have a different authorised use, while an undeclared animal-derived ingredient can leave import arrangements unresolved. Freeze the formulation in writing, require approval for substitutions and settle the document checklist before loading.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on poultry feed premixes from China?

The selected starch-based lines carry £19, £46 or £85 per 1,000 kg. The listed high-protein pea mineral and vitamin preparation carries 8%. Milk-containing recipes can carry higher duties; classification follows the formulation.

Can a Chinese poultry premix use any feed additive?

Do not assume an additive is acceptable. Ask the competent authority to confirm its authorisation status in Great Britain for the intended poultry use before approving the formulation.

Does a poultry premix need a representative in Great Britain?

Certain imported premixtures do. Ask the competent authority to confirm whether the additive combination requires a manufacturer’s representative before ordering.

What should I test when poultry premix arrives?

Check agreed vitamin and trace-element concentrations, relevant enzyme activity, mixing uniformity and moisture. Compare representative arrival samples with batch reports and retained loading samples.
