Potato planter codes and zero duty

Heading 8432 covers agricultural soil preparation and cultivation machinery. Conventional potato planters fall within the planters and transplanters line; no-till models have a separate line. The table also includes parts and separately supplied soil preparation equipment. Those associated goods are not all classified as complete potato planters.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 October 2026, every listed line carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. Zero duty does not remove the machinery safety requirements for sale in Great Britain.

Confirm the commodity code using the machine's planting method, configuration and whether the shipment contains complete machines or parts. See the seed drills guide for the wider heading.

Specify the seed cups and tractor connection

Specify whole or cut seed potatoes, the intended seed size range, cup or belt feed, row spacing, planting depth and adjustment method. Agree how the sample trial will record missed drops, double drops and damaged tubers. Include hopper access, cleaning access and the availability of replacement cups, belts and chains.

Match the mounting arrangement, loaded machine weight and drive system to the intended tractor. Confirm hydraulic connections and any power take-off connection from drawings. State whether fertiliser placement and ridging equipment are included, and identify anything supplied separately.

For sale in Great Britain, new machinery must carry CE or UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions. Cultivation machinery must meet the machinery safety rules, including guarding. Match the documents to the actual planter model rather than accepting paperwork for a different implement.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: An illustrative batch of tractor-mounted potato planters under 8432 39 90 00, invoiced at £21,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £23,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £23,500, so it is £4,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Feed system: trial representative seed potatoes and check misses, doubles, bruising, cup retention and feed consistency as the hopper empties.

Planting equipment: check spacing and depth adjustments, opener alignment, covering discs, ridge formation and wear-part fit against the agreed sample.

Tractor connection: check mounting dimensions, hose routing, drive alignment, guards and stability with the hopper loaded.

Arrival condition: inspect bent frames, cracked welds, loose fasteners, chain tension and corrosion; match the model plate, conformity marking, declaration and English manual to the delivered machine.

What goes wrong

Cups that suit the factory's demonstration potatoes can miss or double-feed the buyer's seed. Poor opener alignment and slipping ground-drive wheels can disturb spacing and depth. Bent covering discs may leave exposed tubers or uneven ridges. Trial the agreed seed material in soil and record the settings, rather than accepting an unloaded workshop demonstration.

Transport damage can alter alignment even when the feed mechanism worked before dispatch. Compare arrival measurements with the approved drawings and inspection photographs before use. Agree replacement wear parts and the method for correcting damaged assemblies before shipment.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on potato planters from China?

How do I check whether a planter suits my tractor?

Compare the mounting drawings, loaded weight, drive arrangement and hydraulic connections with your tractor. Check any power take-off connection and test the combination with a loaded hopper.

What should a potato planter sample test show?
