Duty and classification for portable mini washers

Heading 8450 covers household or laundry-type washing machines, including machines that both wash and dry. For portable mini models, distinguish dry linen capacity, automatic operation, loading arrangement and built-in centrifugal drying. Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all supplied lines carry 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. Product compliance still needs checking before sale.

Give your customs broker the operating description, dry linen capacity and details of any spin compartment to confirm the commodity code. Do not classify from the word portable alone. Use the import duty and VAT guide when calculating import taxes.

Specify capacity, filling and power supply

Specify dry linen capacity rather than tub volume. Agree whether the machine washes only, spins in the same compartment or needs clothes transferred to a separate spin compartment. Set out manual or automatic filling, drainage by gravity or pump, hose connections, storage dimensions and carrying arrangements.

Specify the UK plug, cable, inlet and drain hoses where fitted. Ask for English instructions covering filling, drainage, loading, storage and any transit restraints. For equipment covered by the electrical safety regulations in Great Britain, the importer must ensure that instructions are in easily understandable English.

Confirm with the relevant product-safety authority whether household ecodesign provisions apply to the exact power arrangement, including models that can run on both mains electricity and batteries or connect to the mains only through a separately bought converter. Confirm the exact design and obtain model-specific test data, product information and applicable label data before ordering.

Electrical and electronic equipment, including cables and spare parts, falls within the hazardous-substance restriction rules unless specifically excluded. Ask for evidence matching the fitted motor, controls, cable and materials through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 400 portable mini front-loading washing machines under 8450 11 11 00, invoiced at £60,000 free on board, with £6,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £66,000. Duty at 2% is £1,320. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £67,320, so it is £13,464. Inspection checklist

Capacity and controls: run the agreed programme with representative laundry at the declared dry linen load; check washing, rinsing and any spin function.

Water and drainage: inspect tub seams, seals and hose joints for leaks; check complete drainage using the intended pump or gravity arrangement.

Spin and handling: check vibration, movement, lid operation and carrying handles; confirm the instructions explain emptying before storage or transport.

Identity and documents: match the delivered model, power arrangement, hoses and cable to the approved sample and test evidence; check English instructions and applicable label information at inspection.

What goes wrong

Tub volume is presented as washing capacity, but clothes cannot circulate at the claimed load. A wash-only machine is sold with pictures suggesting spin drying, or a gravity drain hose cannot empty into the buyer's intended waste connection. Agree a loaded demonstration using the actual filling and drainage arrangement.

Light machines can move during spin, hose joints leak and drain pumps block. Reports may cover a different motor or power supply, while instructions omit emptying or transit-restraint removal.
