Sourcing high-tenacity polyester yarn from China
Polyester high-tenacity filament yarn from China carries 0% UK duty across the relevant lines. Match the yarn construction and dyeing-package specification to the code; finished sewing thread and retail yarn belong elsewhere. Cambridge China Bridge sources polyester high-tenacity filament yarn.

Zero duty on the high-tenacity polyester lines
Heading 5402 covers synthetic filament yarn other than sewing thread, not put up for retail sale. Its high-tenacity polyester branch includes yarn whether or not textured, with specific lines for sewing-thread production and qualifying dyeing-tube packages. The table includes other folded or cabled polyester yarn as a classification comparison, outside the high-tenacity branch.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 October 2026, the high-tenacity polyester lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for these lines. Import VAT is separate from customs duty; see UK import duty and VAT.
Confirm the commodity code against the supplier's construction and test data. For 5402 20 00 07, compare every listed condition, including twist, linear density, tenacity, elongation, shrinkage and dyeing-tube winding. A dyeing tube alone does not establish the code. See the wider synthetic filament yarn guide for neighbouring constructions.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-tenacity polyester Z-twisted yarn for sewing-thread production | 5402 20 00 05 | 0% | None |
| High-tenacity polyester multifilament on dyeing tubes, meeting listed specifications | 5402 20 00 07 | 0% | None |
| Other high-tenacity polyester filament yarn | 5402 20 00 10 | 0% | None |
| Comparison: other polyester folded or cabled yarn, outside the high-tenacity branch | 5402 62 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify strength, shrinkage and winding
State polyester composition, linear density, filament count, minimum tenacity, elongation at break and shrinkage under an agreed test method. Specify whether the yarn is textured, single, folded or cabled, its twist direction and twist level, oil pick-up, lustre and package weight. Describe the intended weaving, cord-making or sewing-thread production process so the factory can supply a trial package.
Agree package dimensions, winding density, tail ends and whether perforated dyeing tubes are needed. Keep an approved sample and a batch test report tied to the shipment's merge number. For dyed yarn, agree the shade reference and fastness checks. Textile labels must show fibre content. REACH restrictions can limit, ban or set conditions on substances; request the dye and finish details for a chemical compliance review.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20 tonnes of high-tenacity polyester filament yarn under 5402 20 00 10, invoiced at £29,000 free on board, with £2,600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £31,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £31,600, so it is £6,320. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Strength: test tenacity and elongation on packages from different cartons against the agreed specification; match the results to the shipped batch.
Shrinkage: use the agreed temperature, exposure and measurement method; compare the result with the approved sample before releasing yarn to production.
Winding: check package weight, tube condition, tail ends and build; unwind samples to find broken filaments, loops and snagging.
Identity and shade: reconcile carton and package batch references with the test report; check fibre information and trial-dye each merge where colour consistency matters.

What goes wrong
A supplier's high-tenacity description does not replace measured strength and elongation. Yarn can meet the agreed linear density yet fail the strength or shrinkage specification. Uneven oil pick-up, damaged tubes and irregular winding cause poor unwinding; broken filaments interrupt weaving or cord-making.
Mixed merge numbers can dye differently and create visible variation in the finished textile. Retain samples from the delivered batch, keep carton-to-package traceability and run a production trial before using the shipment in bulk. Agree rejection criteria with the factory through the inspection brief.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on high-tenacity polyester yarn from China?
The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty on the high-tenacity polyester lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.
Is high-tenacity polyester yarn the same as sewing thread?
No. Yarn intended for sewing-thread production can fall within 5402, but finished synthetic filament sewing thread belongs in 5401. Confirm the supplied construction.
What should I ask the factory to test?
Ask for batch results for linear density, tenacity, elongation and shrinkage using agreed methods. Check winding and unwinding on delivered packages.
Does a perforated dyeing tube establish the commodity code?
No. For 5402 20 00 07, the yarn must match all the listed construction and performance conditions, as well as the winding condition.
