Zero duty on injection moulding machines

Heading 8477 covers machinery for working rubber or plastics and machinery for making products from those materials. Plastic injection moulding machines fall under 8477 10 00 00. The table also includes supporting granulators and machinery parts; these are separate goods, rather than alternative injection machine classifications.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the machine, granulator and parts lines shown carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code using the machine's function and specification, and classify separately shipped parts by their description and material. Separately shipped moulds belong to heading 8480. See the wider plastics machinery guide for other equipment.

Specify the mould, resin and production cycle

State the resin, part drawing, mould dimensions and weight, tie-bar clearance, platen layout, mould opening and ejector travel. Agree clamp force, screw diameter, usable shot size and injection pressure for your actual material. Specify hydraulic, electric or hybrid drive, cooling connections, electrical supply and any robot interface.

Agree a factory trial with your mould or a representative mould and your intended resin. Record cycle time, part weight, dimensional results, reject reasons and energy use at the agreed settings. Confirm English controller screens, software access, wiring and hydraulic diagrams, and the replacement heater bands and thermocouples.

New machinery placed on the Great Britain market must be CE or UKCA marked, accompanied by a declaration of conformity and English instructions. Machinery must be safe before being placed on that market or put into service. For machines with manual loading or unloading, confirm the applicable conformity route with the relevant authority. Agree that route before ordering and arrange testing and certification support where needed.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: two 250-tonne plastic injection moulding machines under 8477 10 00 00, invoiced at £64,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £69,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £69,000, so it is £13,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Mould fit: check platen mounting, tie-bar clearance, nozzle alignment, mould opening and ejection using the agreed mould.

Production trial: compare shot consistency, part dimensions, flash, short shots and cycle time with the agreed acceptance results.

Safety and documents: have a competent person check guards, gate interlocks and emergency stops; match the machine identity to its marking, declaration and English instructions.

Arrival condition: check platen and screw corrosion, hydraulic leaks, loose connections and transport damage; repeat the agreed trial after installation.

What goes wrong

A nominal shot capacity does not establish whether the machine can fill your mould with your resin. Insufficient mould clearance, unsuitable screw selection or an optimistic cycle claim can leave the buyer with a machine that cannot produce the intended part. Use the agreed mould trial to resolve these points before shipment.

Defeatable gate interlocks, missing diagrams, locked controller software and unavailable heater components create safety and maintenance problems. Record software access and spare component specifications in the order, and protect the platens and screw against rust during transport.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on plastic injection moulding machines from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% duty under 8477 10 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded.

Do Chinese injection moulding machines need CE or UKCA marking?

Yes. Ask the factory for the declaration of conformity before you pay the deposit, and check that it names the exact model, lists the UK or EU machinery rules it meets and comes with English instructions. The machine itself must carry the CE or UKCA mark.

Are manually loaded injection moulding machines high-risk machinery?

Ask the maker which route it used.

Does the injection mould use the same commodity code as the machine?

Separately shipped moulds belong to heading 8480, rather than the injection machine code. Describe the mould separately when confirming classification.
