Sourcing party photo booth props from China
Party photo booth props entered as non-Christmas festive articles or non-glass Christmas articles pay 2% UK duty from China; the wider heading ranges from 0% to 2%. Consumer props must be safe for foreseeable use, and children's play products need a toy-scope check. Cambridge China Bridge sources party photo booth props.

Duty on festive photo booth props
Heading 9505 covers festive, carnival and other entertainment articles. For party photo booth props, establish whether the actual design is a festive article rather than assuming every printed cut-out belongs here. The table shows product variants sharing tariff lines. For the wider heading, see paper party hats.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, non-Christmas festive articles and Christmas articles of materials other than glass carry 2% duty from China. Christmas articles of glass carry 0%. The supplied tariff records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duties and no suspensions. For Christmas baubles, see our Christmas bauble sourcing guide.
The tariff attaches cat and dog fur controls: importing or exporting that fur, including products made from it, is banned. It also attaches a fluorinated greenhouse gas import control to the non-Christmas line; confirm its declaration requirements with your customs broker. Cultural export licensing is also listed. Confirm the commodity code against the materials, design and intended use.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-Christmas festive photo props: moustache cut-outs | 9505 90 00 00 | 2% | None |
| Christmas photo props of materials other than glass | 9505 10 90 00 | 2% | None |
Specify the cut-outs, sticks and finished photograph
List every shape and its quantity within the set. Specify finished dimensions, card thickness, surface finish, print colours, stick material, attachment position and whether assembly happens at the factory or after delivery. Approve a complete assembled set, with the printed face pointing towards the camera and the stick hidden behind it.
Photograph samples under the lighting your customers will use. Glossy surfaces can reflect flash, thin card can curl, and small lettering can disappear in the photograph. Check that moustaches, glasses and speech bubbles remain readable when held beside a face.
For ordinary consumer props within general product safety rules in Great Britain, safety for foreseeable use is required. If designed or intended for play by children under 14, assess whether toy rules apply before approving production. Set out the intended users and use in the supplier brief.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 5,000 printed party photo booth prop sets under 9505 90 00 00, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £35,000. Duty at 2% is £700. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £35,700, so it is £7,140. Import taxes total £7,840; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £700 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Artwork: compare wording, colours, cut lines and the complete shape assortment against the approved sample.
Attachments: handle assembled props repeatedly; check for loose glue joints, exposed staples, splinters and sharp stick ends.
Camera test: check glare, legibility, card curling and whether fingers or sticks obscure the printed design.
Packing: open packed sets and check missing pieces, bent corners, glue transfer and moisture damage. Use the approved set as the inspection reference.

What goes wrong
A loose cut-out can look acceptable on the packing table but rotate or detach when held. Poor attachment placement makes the prop awkward to grip or puts the stick across the artwork. Assess finished assemblies rather than approving print sheets alone.
Mixed designs often arrive with repeated shapes and missing pieces. Require a packing list showing the assortment inside each set, and compare opened retail packs with it. Keep damaged or incomplete sets separate while the supplier resolves the defect.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For own-brand ranges, see sourcing for brands.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on party photo booth props from China?
The supplied tariff records show 2% for non-Christmas festive articles and non-glass Christmas articles, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duties. Confirm that your props fit the chosen tariff line.
Are party photo booth props toys?
Assess the design and intended use. Products designed or intended for play by children under 14 can fall within toy rules. A photo prop description alone does not settle the assessment.
Should I buy assembled props or loose pieces?
Approve the finished assembly either way. Factory assembly lets you inspect joints before shipment; loose pieces need clear attachment positions and a sample assembled using the supplied materials.
How do I stop photo props looking poor on camera?
Photograph the approved sample with typical event lighting. Check glare, lettering size, colour contrast, curling and whether the stick or the user's hand covers the artwork.
