Sourcing oxygen-free copper tubes from China

Oxygen-free copper tubes from China classified as refined copper under heading 7411 carry 4% UK duty across the relevant lines, with no listed trade remedies. Specify the grade and require batch oxygen-content evidence rather than accepting an oxygen-free label alone. Cambridge China Bridge sources oxygen-free copper tubes.

UK duty on oxygen-free copper tubes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7411 covers copper tubes and pipes. For oxygen-free tubes supplied as refined copper, the relevant forms are straight tubes, unprocessed level-wound coils and other tubes. Smooth and inner-grooved level-wound coils share a commodity code and are shown separately in the table.

All relevant refined-copper lines carry 4% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. This tariff position does not establish that a tube is suitable for its intended application.

Confirm composition, form and processing with your customs broker using the commodity code guide. An oxygen-free sales description alone does not settle classification. See the copper tubes and pipes guide for the wider heading.

Specify the oxygen-free grade and tube condition

Write the copper grade, agreed maximum oxygen content and test method into the purchase specification. Require a mill certificate linked to the supplied batch, showing composition and oxygen results. Specify conductivity where it matters to the application, rather than treating the oxygen-free description as proof of performance.

Specify outside diameter, wall thickness, tolerances, temper, straight length or coil weight, bore finish and end condition. Agree internal cleanliness, end caps and packing that prevents dents. State whether the tube will be bent, flared, brazed or machined so sample checks reflect your process.

For pressure-system applications, check the intended equipment's regulatory scope before approving the tube. The Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations cover pressure equipment and assemblies with a maximum allowable pressure above 0.5 bar. Ask your equipment designer to confirm the material evidence needed for the intended application.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2 tonnes of straight oxygen-free copper tubes under 7411 10 10 00, invoiced at £22,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £22,800. Duty at 4% is £912. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £23,712, so it is £4,742.40. Import taxes total £5,654.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £912 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match bundle labels to the mill certificate and batch oxygen analysis; independently test a retained sample where material identity is critical.

Dimensions: measure outside diameter, wall thickness, ovality and straightness across sampled tubes; check coil weight against the ordered length and dimensions.

Temper and bore: check hardness or agreed forming tests, inspect cut ends for burrs, and check inside for oil, residue or moisture.

Packing: check end caps, dry wrapping, bundle separation and protection against crushing. Record findings using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

An oxygen-free label can arrive without batch oxygen results, or the certificate can describe a different batch. Thin walls, uneven thickness or the wrong temper can cause problems during forming and assembly. Bore contamination and crushed coils can make otherwise correctly specified material unusable.

Agree acceptance checks before ordering and retain an approved sample with its test record. Keep disputed batches separate while composition, dimensions and condition are checked. Use factory verification to review the producer's testing and batch-traceability arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on oxygen-free copper tubes from China?

The relevant refined-copper tube lines under heading 7411 carry 4% duty in the supplied tariff facts. No anti-dumping or countervailing measures are listed.

Which commodity code covers straight oxygen-free copper tubes?

Straight tubes supplied as refined copper fall under 7411 10 10 00. Confirm the composition and supplied form before declaring the code.

How do I verify that copper tubes are oxygen-free?

Agree the grade, oxygen limit and test method. Request batch-linked oxygen analysis and a mill certificate, then independently test samples where the application warrants it.

What should I check before bending or brazing the tubes?

Check temper, wall thickness, ovality and bore cleanliness against the order. Trial an approved sample using your actual forming or joining process before accepting the batch.
