Specify the variety, body-length measurement method, colour pattern, body shape, tail form and acceptable fin condition. For fancy goldfish, agree head growth, back profile and swimming balance using current photographs and video of the actual fish. Record whether selection is by individual fish or by an agreed batch grade, and prohibit substitutions without written agreement.

For imports into England and Wales, obtain Fish Health Inspectorate authorisation and source approval. Coldwater ornamental imports need a biosecurity measures plan. Goods from China need the correct animal health certificate, its signed original accompanying the consignment, advance notification through the import system and entry through a suitable border control post for checks.

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative hypothetical order: 12 individually selected ornamental goldfish under 0301 11 00 00, invoiced at £2,100 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,600, so it is £720. Inspection checklist

Identity: match the variety, agreed grade and actual fish to the purchase record, photographs, invoice and health documents.

Condition: observe swimming balance, breathing, fins, scales, eyes and skin during a planned receiving assessment. Record dead or distressed fish and seek specialist advice for abnormal signs.

Packing and water: check bags for leaks, seals for damage and boxes for crushing. Measure arrival water temperature and water quality against the receiving plan.

Handover: arrange a competent receiver and prepared holding facilities. Photograph discrepancies during the planned unpacking, and retain the shipping and supplier records.

What goes wrong

A breeder's photographs may show selected fish rather than the batch offered. Colour, size, tail shape or head growth can differ on arrival, and an attractive still image can hide poor swimming balance. Agree actual-fish evidence, grading and substitution terms before payment, including how losses and specification disputes will be documented.

A tariff code can be mistaken for permission to import. Resolve source approval, certification and the border route before dispatch. Leaking bags and delayed handover can leave fish distressed; agree an arrival-care plan and an emergency contact.
