Sourcing nylon textured yarn from China

Nylon textured filament yarn from China carries 0% UK duty across the relevant lines. Classification depends on construction and linear density; heading 5402 excludes sewing thread and retail-packed yarn. Fibre composition information matters when selling textiles. Cambridge China Bridge sources nylon textured filament yarn.

Zero duty on nylon textured filament yarn

Heading 5402 covers synthetic filament yarn other than sewing thread, not put up for retail sale. For nylon textured yarn, 5402 31 00 00 covers a linear density per single yarn not more than 50 tex; 5402 32 00 00 covers more than 50 tex.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 October 2026, the listed nylon lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. Import VAT is separate from customs duty.

The table includes high-tenacity and other single nylon yarn as classification comparisons, rather than substitutes for ordinary textured yarn. Confirm the commodity code from the mill's construction and linear-density data. For another product family within the wider heading, see polyester textured filament yarn.

Specify crimp, dye response and package build

State the nylon polymer, linear density in dtex, filament count, lustre and cross-section. Agree tenacity, elongation, crimp contraction, shrinkage, oil pick-up and any twist, with the test methods and acceptance tolerances. Specify package weight, winding build and tail ends for the receiving mill.

For yarn to be dyed, approve a knitted dye-test tube and retain the reference lot. For coloured yarn, agree the shade standard and colour-fastness checks. Textile fibre composition must be communicated: labels may be replaced or supplemented by accompanying commercial documents when supplying businesses within the supply chain.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20 tonnes of nylon textured filament yarn under 5402 31 00 00, invoiced at £29,000 free on board, with £2,600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £31,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £31,600, so it is £6,320. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Lot identity: match carton and package labels to the ordered polymer, yarn specification and merge number; keep different merges separate.

Yarn performance: sample packages across the lot and check linear density, tenacity, elongation, crimp and shrinkage against the agreed methods and tolerances.

Dye response: knit and dye a sample alongside the retained reference lot before bulk production; compare shade and look for barré.

Packages: check net yarn weight, winding build, damaged tubes, accessible tail ends, broken filaments and unwinding behaviour. Use an agreed inspection plan.

What goes wrong

Mixed merge numbers can take up dye differently and produce barré stripes. Uneven crimp or shrinkage changes the fabric's appearance and dimensions. Broken filaments, loops and uneven oil pick-up can cause knitting stops, holes or poor running.

Keep merge identity through receiving and production. Hold suspect packages separately, compare the lot with the approved sample and run a dye trial before committing it to bulk knitting or weaving.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on nylon textured yarn from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for the relevant nylon lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.

Which commodity code covers nylon textured filament yarn?

5402 31 00 00 covers not more than 50 tex per single yarn; 5402 32 00 00 covers more than 50 tex. High-tenacity yarn has a separate classification.

Why does nylon yarn produce barré after dyeing?

Different merge numbers can take up dye differently. Keep merges separate and dye a knitted sample alongside the approved reference before bulk production.

Does industrial nylon yarn need fibre composition information?

Yes. For supplies to businesses within the supply chain, labels may be replaced or supplemented by accompanying commercial documents stating fibre composition.
