Duty on nylon straps and separate parts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 9113 covers watch straps, bands, bracelets and their parts. Nylon textile straps carry 6% duty from China under 9113 90 00 95 when not hand-made, or 9113 90 00 91 when hand-made. The selected lines record no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. The parts rows concern separate imports, rather than hardware already fitted to a nylon strap.

The tariff attaches cat and dog fur import controls to the textile and other-material lines. Imports of that fur and products made from it are banned, including supplies from China. Specify nylon without fur additions and ask your customs broker to confirm the declaration requirement. The base-metal line also carries a CITES import control; confirm its requirement with your broker. The selected lines additionally list cultural-object export licensing, and some list cat and dog fur or CITES export controls.

Send your broker the material breakdown, construction photographs and whether the shipment contains complete straps or separate parts. Confirm the commodity code before ordering. See the watch straps and bracelets guide for the wider heading.

Specify the webbing and NATO construction

Specify nylon webbing, weave, width, thickness, overall length and usable adjustment range. Draw the main strap, return section, keeper positions and buckle attachment so the factory can reproduce the intended threading route. Agree colour references, stripe placement, hole spacing, heat-sealed edges and stitching. Ask for a sample fitted to the intended watch case.

Name the buckle and keeper material, finish and attachment method. Confirm applicable UK REACH nickel release requirements for metal parts in direct and prolonged skin contact with the relevant authority; request reports matching the supplied hardware. Screen dyed webbing for restricted azo dyes. General product safety rules require safe products on the Great Britain market, so include sharp edges, loose hardware and attachment failure in your safety review.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 800 nylon NATO watch straps; illustrative order under 9113 90 00 95, invoiced at £1,968 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,768. Duty at 6% is £166.08. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,934.08, so it is £586.82. Import taxes total £752.90; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £166.08 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure width, thickness and length against the approved drawing; thread the strap through the intended watch case and check that the folded tail sits securely in the keepers.

Webbing: compare weave and stripe alignment with the approved sample; check sealed edges and holes for fraying, hard melted lumps and colour transfer after rubbing or wetting.

Hardware and stitching: inspect buckle tongues and keepers for burrs; pull the attachments and flex stitched areas using the agreed inspection method.

Documents and packing: match nickel release reports to the hardware supplied; check dyed-webbing reports, colour and size labels, carton quantities and batch identification. Use the quality inspection guide to prepare the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

Webbing that looks correct in a photograph can be too thick to pass beneath the watch case or too stiff to fold through the keepers. Poorly sealed holes fray, melted edges scratch the wrist, keeper positions leave the tail loose, and weak buckle stitching pulls apart.

Approve a fitted sample for each ordered size and colour. Agree checks for colour transfer, attachment strength and edge finish before production. Recheck the supplied buckle finish against the tested sample, because a report for different hardware does not establish the quality of the parts delivered.
