Sourcing nylon cable ties from China

Nylon cable ties entered under 3926 90 97 90 carry 6% UK duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Consumer-use ties must meet applicable general product safety requirements in Great Britain. Fix the resin grade and test the locking head. Cambridge China Bridge sources nylon cable ties.

UK duty on nylon cable ties

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 October 2026, heading 3926 covers other articles of plastics. For nylon cable ties confirmed under 3926 90 97 90, the recorded duty is 6%, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure. The listed suspensions concern specified products; do not assume they cover cable ties. The table shows product variants sharing the same provisional code.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches veterinary control, an import prohibition on goods for torture and repression, and an export restriction for such goods to this code. Confirm the applicable requirements and declaration evidence with your customs broker for the actual ties from China, particularly if designed as restraints. These heading-level flags should not be treated as a blanket prohibition on ordinary cable-management ties.

Confirm the material, construction and intended use through the commodity code guide. For the wider heading, see plastic electrical cable glands. Keep duty separate from import VAT when costing the order; see UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the resin and locking performance

Specify the nylon resin grade, permitted recycled content, length, width, usable bundle diameter and colour. Define whether the tie is permanent or releasable, its locking-head design and the agreed loop tensile test. Approve samples on the cables and bundles you actually use.

For outdoor or hot environments, ask for evidence supporting the claimed sunlight resistance and operating temperature range for the supplied grade and colour. Agree conditioning and storage instructions before comparing test results. Black colour alone is insufficient purchasing evidence of outdoor performance.

Ties intended for or likely to be used by consumers fall within the general product safety framework in Great Britain. Confirm with HSE whether UK REACH candidate-list substance information duties apply and what information must be supplied. Ask for substance information covering the resin, colourants and additives.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 50,000 general-purpose nylon cable ties under 3926 90 97 90, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,400. Duty at 6% is £384. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,784, so it is £1,356.80. Import taxes total £1,740.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £384 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: measure strap length, width and thickness against the approved drawing, and check the usable bundle diameter.

Locking: thread and tighten samples, check engagement and back-slip, and test loop strength using the agreed conditioning and method.

Moulding: check the head and strap for cracks, flash, short moulding and sharp edges that could damage cable insulation.

Packing: check bag counts, product identification and batch references, then compare samples from different cartons. Use the same checks on arrival; see quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A tie can look correct but slip because the locking tooth is poorly moulded. Resin substitution or inconsistent conditioning can change flexibility and breaking behaviour. Thin straps, cracked heads and sharp flash can escape a visual comparison with the sample.

Outdoor claims can arrive without supporting evidence for the actual material and colour. Retain approved samples, agree measurable acceptance criteria and compare production samples before shipment. Investigate discrepancies before accepting the batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on nylon cable ties from China?

The supplied tariff data records 6% under 3926 90 97 90, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm that this code fits your ties.

Are black nylon cable ties suitable for outdoor use?

Do not rely on colour alone. Ask for sunlight-resistance evidence for the actual resin grade and colour, and agree how the claim will be checked.

How do I check cable tie strength?

Agree a loop tensile test, sample conditioning and acceptance criteria. Check locking-head engagement and back-slip as well as strap breakage.

What chemical information should I request?

Ask for UK REACH substance information for the resin, colourants and additives. Confirm with HSE whether candidate-list substances trigger safe-use information duties, including naming the substance.
