Sourcing Nursing Pillows from China
Nursing pillows from China carry 2% UK duty across the relevant filled-pillow lines, with no recorded trade remedy. Consumer products must be safe. The baby sleep pillow alert excludes pillows designed and marketed only for breastfeeding; this is not product approval. Cambridge China Bridge sources nursing pillows.

Nursing pillow duty and classification
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 9404 covers stuffed pillows and similar furnishing articles. Nursing pillows filled with feathers or down fall under 9404 90 10 00; other filled nursing pillows are candidates for 9404 90 90 00. The table shows filling variants sharing these commodity lines, rather than separate tariff codes.
Both relevant lines carry 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. It attaches cat and dog fur import and export controls: imports and exports of those furs and products made from them are banned. It also lists a DCMS Export Licence control; ask your customs broker to confirm its relevance if re-exporting.
Give your broker the filling composition, cover construction, photographs and intended use to confirm the commodity code. Separately supplied replacement covers need their own classification check. See the wider bedding guide for other products within this heading.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nursing pillows filled with polyester fibre | 9404 90 90 00 | 2% | None |
| Nursing pillows filled with feathers or down | 9404 90 10 00 | 2% | None |
Specify feeding support, filling and washable covers
Specify the curved shape, opening, height, firmness, filling material and fill weight against an approved sample. Agree whether the cover is removable, how it is washed and whether the inner casing contains loose filling independently of the outer zip. Assess support with the intended feeding posture rather than judging appearance alone.
Businesses importing or selling consumer products are responsible for their safety. The official baby sleep pillow alert excludes nursing pillows designed and marketed only for breastfeeding. Keep the product brief, packaging and sales images consistent with that purpose; request a safety assessment of foreseeable misuse rather than treating the exclusion as approval.
Confirm with the relevant authority whether the pillows fall within the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988, and which filling ignitability requirements, permitted alternatives and labelling requirements apply. Tie test reports to the actual filling and construction. Agree the testing brief through testing and certification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 600 polyester-filled nursing pillows, illustrative order under 9404 90 90 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £1,080 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,080. Duty at 2% is £141.60. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,221.60, so it is £1,444.32. Import taxes total £1,585.92; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £141.60 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Shape and support: compare the opening, height and firmness with the approved sample; check for uneven filling and collapse during handling.
Containment: inspect inner seams, outer seams and zip ends; check that handling and cover removal do not release fibres, foam pieces or beads.
Washing: wash the removable cover using the proposed instructions; check shrinkage, colour transfer, seam distortion and fit when replaced.
Arrival condition: unpack samples to check recovery, dampness, odour and clumping; compare filling, labels and construction with the approved specification and test reports.

What goes wrong
A sample supports the feeding position but bulk pillows arrive underfilled or unevenly packed. Covers shrink and become difficult to refit, zips snag, and weak inner seams let loose filling escape. Compression packing can leave the pillow distorted. Agree acceptance criteria and compare production samples after unpacking and washing.
A supplier substitutes filling after testing or supplies packaging that suggests infant sleep instead of feeding support. Review the actual production materials and every proposed image before shipment. A feeding-only brief and the alert exclusion do not remove the business's responsibility for product safety.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For own-brand ranges, see sourcing for brands.
