Zero duty on unmixed nicotinamide

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 October 2026, heading 2936 covers vitamins, their derivatives and intermixtures. The other-vitamins line, 2936 29 00 00, carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension recorded. The table shows different purchasing grades under the same tariff line.

The tariff attaches export controls for dangerous chemicals and waste to this line. Confirm their relevance with your customs broker rather than treating them as an import licence requirement. HSE states that there are no prior informed consent notification obligations for imports; listed chemicals nevertheless have annual reporting obligations. In England, waste shipment controls apply only when the material is waste.

Specify nicotinamide identity and intended use

Write nicotinamide explicitly in the purchase specification and require the supplier to identify the substance tested. Do not accept a generic niacin description without confirming the chemical form. Agree food, cosmetic, feed or pharmacopoeia grade, assay method and reporting basis, impurity profile, moisture, particle size and whether any carrier or processing aid remains.

For supplements, confirm the permitted vitamin form and finished-product labelling requirements. Confirm any feed-additive authorisation requirements with the relevant feed authority. For pharmaceutical grades, confirm applicable good manufacturing practice requirements and supporting evidence with the medicines regulator. If importing finished supplements, you are legally responsible for their composition, safety and labelling. A supplier's grade description alone does not establish suitability for your intended use.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative bulk ingredient order: 10 tonnes of unmixed nicotinamide powder under 2936 29 00 00, invoiced at £32,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £34,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £34,500, so it is £6,900. Inspection checklist

Identity and assay: sample the shipped batch and check nicotinamide identity and assay against the agreed specification, rather than relying on an earlier sample.

Impurities: review batch results for related substances, residual solvents where relevant, heavy metals and microbiology against the agreed grade.

Powder performance: check moisture, clumping, particle size and dissolution in your intended formulation before releasing stock.

Packing and records: check sealed liners, damage, batch labels and retest dates against the analysis certificate. Arrange representative sampling through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A certificate headed niacin can leave the actual chemical form unclear. A passing assay can also hide differences in impurities or powder behaviour. Require identity evidence and a complete batch specification, then compare the shipment with the approved sample.

Split liners, moisture ingress and mismatched batch documents can make arrival checks inconclusive. Hold affected stock separately until testing and document checks resolve the discrepancy. Do not release material for a different use merely because the supplier calls it a higher grade.
