Nickel-alloy wire: 2% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 25 October 2026, heading 7505 covers nickel bars, rods, profiles and wire. Nickel-alloy wire under 7505 22 00 00 carries 2% duty for goods from China. Unalloyed nickel lines carry 0%. The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The table shows buying forms within the same nickel-alloy wire line.

The tariff attaches import and export waste controls to nickel-alloy wire. Ask your customs broker to confirm their application to your shipment from China. If importing waste into England under notification controls, shipment can begin after consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities involved. Confirm the route before buying material described as scrap, reclaimed or rejected wire.

This guide concerns solid nickel-alloy welding wire. Give your broker the composition, physical form and any coating or core details to confirm the commodity code. See the wider nickel guide for bars, other wire and mesh.

Specify the filler alloy and spool

Specify the filler alloy, purchasing specification, chemical composition, diameter and tolerance, surface condition, spool dimensions, winding and pack weight. Describe the parent metals and welding process. Ask for a heat-specific mill certificate and agree a sample welding trial using your own equipment before approving the production material.

Identify and manage the risks presented by substances you import and place on the Great Britain market under UK REACH. Employers must control the health risks from welding fume. Include composition and safe-use information in the supplier document request.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2 tonnes of solid nickel-alloy welding wire under 7505 22 00 00, invoiced at £46,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £46,900. Duty at 2% is £938. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £47,838, so it is £9,567.60. Import taxes total £10,505.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £938 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: compare the heat certificate with the ordered alloy and arrange independent composition checks on sampled heats.

Diameter and feeding: measure wire against the agreed tolerance and trial the spool through the intended feeder for snagging or uneven payout.

Surface and packing: check for oil, dirt, oxidation, kinks, damaged spool flanges and moisture inside the packaging.

Traceability: match spool labels, heat numbers and certificates before releasing stock. Use the inspection guide to brief the inspector.

What goes wrong

A similar alloy name can conceal different chemistry. Generic certificates, mixed heats and labels that do not match the shipment prevent reliable acceptance. Uneven winding or damaged spools can interrupt feeding even when the composition is correct.

Agree acceptance criteria for composition, dimensions, feeding and the sample weld before ordering. Keep disputed heats separate and investigate the wire, shielding gas, parent metal preparation and welding settings before attributing a weld defect to the filler.
