Duty on moulded glass ventilation blocks

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 7016 covers pressed or moulded glass articles for building or construction, alongside glass mosaic smallwares, leaded lights and foam glass forms. Building blocks and bricks are described under 7016 90 40 00. The table shows the relevant line for this product family.

All lines in the supplied heading snapshot carry 0% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls are listed. This tariff snapshot does not establish suitability for a building project.

Confirm the commodity code using the material, product drawing and construction use, particularly where the shipment includes a frame or opening mechanism. See the glass blocks and glass mosaic guide for the wider heading.

Specify the ventilation opening and installation

Specify the external dimensions, thickness, glass pattern, opening shape and clear passage through the block. State whether the design has a permanent opening or an opening insert. For supplied screens, frames or closures, agree materials, fixing details, opening direction and replacement arrangements. Approve a sample fitted into the intended installation system.

Ask which construction-product standard covers the exact ventilation design and whether the manufacturer supplies a declaration of performance and supporting reports. Do not assume that documents for a sealed glass block cover a ventilating version. Where legitimately affixed, CE marking allows continued supply to the Great Britain market.

For projects in England, Approved Document F provides ventilation guidance. Ask the project designer to confirm the required ventilation performance and the applicable guidance before approving the block. For any fire-resistance claim, obtain evidence for the whole installed wall system, including the ventilation component.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 6,000 moulded glass ventilation blocks under 7016 90 40 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £11,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £11,500, so it is £2,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: measure external size, thickness, squareness and the clear opening against the approved drawing; trial-fit samples into the specified frame or wall detail.

Glass: inspect opening edges and corners for chips, cracks and sharp projections; compare pattern, colour and surface finish with the approved sample.

Ventilation components: check passages are unobstructed, screens are secured and any closures operate without binding; compare fitted components with the approved assembly.

Packing and arrival: check dividers protect exposed edges and inserts, inspect pallet stability and open cartons for breakage. Record damage before installation and use the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

An external size match can hide a smaller ventilation passage or an insert that fouls the frame. Screens and closures can restrict the opening, while chipped opening edges may be missed during a face-only inspection. Check the complete assembly against the drawing rather than accepting a photograph of the glass face.

Another risk is receiving reports for an ordinary sealed block instead of the ordered ventilation design. Match documents to the product identity and intended installation. Review claimed performance through testing and certification before approving production.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on glass ventilation blocks from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot records 0% for building blocks and bricks under 7016 90 40 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures listed. Confirm that the exact ventilation block fits this description.

What should I put in a glass ventilation block specification?

Include external dimensions, thickness, clear opening, glass finish, frame fit and any screen or closure. Approve a fitted sample and agree the evidence needed for the intended building use.

Does a glass ventilation block need UKCA marking?

Confirm the construction-product requirements for the exact design. Legitimately affixed CE marking remains accepted for supply to Great Britain; ask for the supporting product documents.

Can a ventilation block use an ordinary glass wall fire rating?

Do not assume it can. Ask for a test report covering the whole installed system, including the ventilation component, rather than relying on a report for sealed blocks.
