Monel wire duty and waste controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7505 covers nickel bars, rods, profiles and wire. Monel nickel-copper alloy wire falls within nickel-alloy wire, code 7505 22 00 00, carrying 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The table shows different supply forms within the same commodity line.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches import and export waste controls to this wire line. Waste shipped under notification controls needs consent from the competent authorities of dispatch, destination and transit before shipment. For a waste consignment from China, ask your customs broker to confirm its classification, applicable procedure and documents before dispatch.

Confirm the commodity code using the composition and supplied form rather than the Monel name alone. For the wider heading and bar products, see nickel-copper alloy bars.

Specify the Monel alloy and drawing condition

Write the exact alloy designation and agreed material specification into the order. Specify diameter and tolerance, annealed or cold-drawn condition, tensile properties, surface finish, coil weight or length, spool dimensions and packing. State the intended forming or fabrication process so the supplier can provide a sample in the proposed condition.

Ask for a heat-specific mill certificate showing chemical composition and mechanical properties. Agree how coil labels will identify the alloy and heat. Use factory verification to check the supplier's drawing and testing capability.

UK REACH restrictions can limit, ban or set conditions on placing substances on the market or using them. If the wire will become an article in prolonged skin contact, confirm any applicable UK REACH nickel-release restrictions with the relevant authority. Agree suitable testing for that intended use through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2 tonnes of annealed Monel wire; illustrative FOB and freight values under 7505 22 00 00, invoiced at £46,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £46,900. Duty at 2% is £938. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £47,838, so it is £9,567.60. Import taxes total £10,505.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £938 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Alloy identity: compare sampled wire composition with the ordered alloy and heat-specific certificate.

Diameter and condition: measure diameter along sampled lengths and compare tensile or hardness results with the agreed drawing condition.

Surface and handling: check for scratches, kinks, damaged spools and tangled winding; trial unwinding and forming on your equipment.

Traceability and packing: match every coil or spool label to its heat certificate and check protection against moisture and transit damage. Plan sampling using our quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A Monel name on the quotation can conceal an unspecified alloy or a substitute composition. Generic certificates, mismatched heat labels and mixed coils make the delivered material difficult to verify. Require the actual heat records and compare them with material testing before acceptance.

Correct composition alone does not settle usability. Wire with the wrong drawing condition, varying diameter or damaged winding can fail during forming or feeding. Approve a sample in the ordered condition and record acceptance criteria before production.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on Monel wire from China?

The supplied tariff facts show 2% for nickel-alloy wire under 7505 22 00 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

Is Monel wire classified as pure nickel wire?

Monel nickel-copper alloy wire belongs in the nickel-alloy wire line. Confirm composition and supplied form rather than relying on the trade name.

How do I check Chinese Monel wire is the right alloy?

Match each coil's heat label to its mill certificate and compare sampled composition with the ordered alloy. Check mechanical properties separately.

Does Monel wire have waste import controls?

The tariff attaches waste controls to the wire line. For a waste shipment from China, confirm the procedure with your broker; notification-controlled waste needs authority consent before shipment.
