Zero duty on molybdenum sheet

Heading 8102 covers molybdenum and its articles, including waste and scrap. Molybdenum sheet falls within 8102 95 00 00, alongside plates, strip and foil. The table shows these flat-product descriptions under the same commodity line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. For other forms, see the molybdenum products guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 20 October 2026, the sheet line carries 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measure, suspension or import control for that line. It attaches waste import and export controls to other lines, including waste and scrap. If offered sheet offcuts as scrap, confirm the applicable requirements with your customs broker before shipment.

Match the material and supplied form to the commodity code, especially where a supplier describes a finished component as sheet. Import VAT is separate from duty; see UK import duty and VAT for the calculation method.

Grade, rolling condition and sheet geometry

Specify pure molybdenum or the agreed alloy, chemical composition, oxygen content, density, grain structure and surface finish. State thickness, width, length, dimensional tolerances and flatness. Agree the working and annealing route against the intended bending, machining or furnace use.

Ask for a mill certificate tied to each batch and an independently tested sample from the first shipment. Agree a bend test using material from the production batch. Put protective packing in the order: rigid support, surface separation and vacuum or inert-gas sealing with desiccant.

Solid-wood crates and pallets used to import goods into Great Britain must meet ISPM15. Specify that packing requirement in the supplier contract alongside the measures intended to prevent bending and oxidation.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 500 kg of molybdenum sheet, illustrative only under 8102 95 00 00, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £30,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £30,800, so it is £6,160. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Chemistry: match batch identification to the mill certificate and check molybdenum content, oxygen and trace elements against the ordered grade.

Geometry: measure thickness across the sheet, check width and length, and assess flatness against the agreed drawing.

Surface and forming: inspect for cracks, laminations, scratches and oxidation; check the agreed bend-test result for the production batch.

Packing and arrival: check rigid support, surface separation, seals and desiccant before dispatch; on arrival, inspect for bent corners, damaged packing and moisture. Use a written inspection brief.

What goes wrong

Incorrect working or annealing can leave sheet liable to crack during bending or machining. A thickness reading at the edge can miss variation elsewhere. Certificates without matching batch identification make it difficult to establish whether the delivered sheet is the material that was tested.

Poor protection can allow oxidation or bending in transit. Record surface condition and packing before shipment, then compare them with arrival photographs. Keep suspect batches separate while the supplier and laboratory investigate.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on molybdenum sheet from China?

The supplied UK Trade Tariff record gives 0% duty for 8102 95 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure. Import VAT is separate.

What should I specify when buying molybdenum sheet?

Agree grade, chemistry, oxygen content, thickness, dimensions, flatness, surface finish and annealed condition. Require a mill certificate linked to each batch.

How do I check whether molybdenum sheet will crack?

Agree the working and annealing condition, then have material from the production batch bend-tested against your intended process. Inspect for cracks and laminations.

Do wooden crates need to meet UK import rules?

Yes. Solid-wood packing used to import goods into Great Britain must meet ISPM15. Include the requirement in the supplier contract.
