Sourcing microscope objectives from China

Mounted microscope objective lenses from China carry 0% UK duty under the other objective lenses line. Confirm the commodity code and the manufacturer's intended use: use in a healthcare setting alone does not establish medical-device status. Cambridge China Bridge sources microscope objective lenses.

Duty on microscope objective lenses

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 9002 covers mounted optical elements that are parts of or fittings for instruments or apparatus. Microscope objective lenses belong within other objective lenses, rather than the camera and projector branch. The table shows product variants sharing the same tariff line.

The supplied tariff record gives 0% duty for goods from China under 9002 19 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure, suspension or attached import control recorded. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code using the mounted assembly description and intended application. Unmounted optical elements belong in a different heading. See the camera lenses and optical filters guide for the wider heading.

Specify the objective and microscope together

Specify magnification, numerical aperture, working distance, mounting thread and shoulder position. State whether the microscope uses a finite tube length or an infinity-corrected system, and identify the tube lens where applicable. Agree the correction class, cover-glass conditions and dry or immersion use.

Provide the microscope model and a reference objective for sample comparison. Specify brightfield, phase contrast, fluorescence or polarising use as applicable. Agree an acceptance image and test method before production, including field sharpness and focus behaviour when changing objectives.

Record the manufacturer's intended use and review any diagnostic claims before ordering. Official guidance says equipment used in a healthcare environment is not automatically a medical device. Where medical-device status applies, confirm any registration and UK Responsible Person requirements with MHRA.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of microscope objective lenses for a laboratory equipment distributor under 9002 19 00 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £11,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £11,500, so it is £2,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Compatibility: fit samples to the intended microscope, check thread engagement and seating, and confirm useful focus without contact with the specimen.

Image quality: compare production samples with the approved objective on the same microscope, illumination and specimen. Check centre and edge sharpness, colour fringes and uneven focus.

Condition: inspect accessible optical surfaces for scratches, contamination and coating defects. Check barrels, markings and any spring-loaded front assembly.

Packing: confirm protective caps, secure individual packing and dry storage protection. Check that each objective's markings match its carton and purchase specification.

What goes wrong

A matching thread does not establish optical compatibility. The wrong correction system or tube lens can produce a poor image despite a secure fit. Incorrect cover-glass conditions or immersion medium can also make a suitable objective appear defective.

Decentring can leave part of the field soft, while contamination and internal fungus reduce contrast. Compare arrival samples with the approved sample before releasing stock. Arrange quality inspection around the actual microscope and agreed acceptance method.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on microscope objectives from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% duty under 9002 19 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure recorded. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Will an objective fit any microscope with the same thread?

Check the correction system, tube lens, shoulder position and working distance as well as the thread. Test the sample on the intended microscope.

Does use in a hospital make an objective a medical device?

Healthcare use alone does not establish medical-device status. Review the manufacturer's intended use and diagnostic claims before deciding the applicable requirements.

How should I inspect microscope objectives on arrival?

Check markings, fit, optical cleanliness and packing. Compare image quality with the approved sample on the intended microscope using the agreed specimen and illumination.
