Sourcing martensitic steel sheets from China

UK duty is 0% across the selected heading 7219 lines for martensitic stainless steel sheets from China. Classification depends on width, thickness, rolling and nickel content; specify the delivery condition and match sheets to heat certificates. Cambridge China Bridge sources martensitic stainless steel sheets.

Duty on martensitic stainless steel sheets

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7219 covers flat-rolled stainless steel products of a width of 600 mm or more. Martensitic sheets are classified by their actual thickness, rolling and further processing, with nickel content distinguishing some lines. The table selects sheet lines from the supplied record; it is not a separate tariff category for martensitic steel.

The selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff snapshot records no steel measure, anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or import control for these lines. Some other lines distinguish the country of consignment, so do not copy a code from a supplier's unrelated shipment.

Confirm the commodity code using the mill chemistry and the sheet dimensions and processing history. For the broader product family, see stainless steel sheet and coil.

Grade, delivery condition and hardening trials

Specify the martensitic grade and its chemical composition, whether sheets are supplied annealed or quenched and tempered, and the hardness required in that delivery condition. Define thickness tolerance, width, length, flatness, finish and edge condition. If you will harden the material after cutting, agree sample coupons and your heat-treatment trial before approving the production material.

Ask for a mill inspection certificate for each heat, showing chemistry, delivery condition and mechanical test results. Agree how sheet labels remain linked to the heat after cutting. Use carbon-capable laboratory testing where grade verification depends on carbon; a handheld X-ray fluorescence analyser cannot measure carbon.

The UK carbon border adjustment mechanism comes into effect on 1 January 2027. Confirm with HMRC or your customs broker whether the cold-rolled stainless sheet lines discussed in the wider guide are within its iron and steel scope. Ask the mill for emissions information and review the UK carbon border guide when planning imports.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 25 tonnes of martensitic stainless steel sheets, cold-rolled, 2 mm thick, nickel below 2.5%; illustrative FOB value and freight under 7219 33 90 90, invoiced at £55,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £58,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £58,500, so it is £11,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match sheet and bundle heat numbers to certificates, and compare chemical results with the ordered martensitic grade. Arrange independent carbon verification where needed.

Condition: check sampled hardness against the agreed delivery condition. Review the heat-treatment record and test agreed coupons where later hardening performance matters.

Dimensions and surface: measure thickness across sampled sheets, check width, length and flatness, and inspect edges, scratches and staining beneath the protective film. Record results during inspection.

Packing: check dry wrapping, sheet separation, edge protection and secure bundles. Solid wood packaging imported into Great Britain must meet the international wood packaging standard, and certification cannot replace the required mark.

What goes wrong

An order described only as stainless sheet leaves the grade and delivery condition open to disagreement. Sheets can look alike while their chemistry or hardness differs. A certificate reused across heats, or labels lost during cutting, leaves the buyer unable to connect test results to the delivered stock.

Material accepted on appearance alone may fail the buyer's hardening trial. Thin spots, distortion, edge damage and scratches can also appear after unpacking. Agree acceptance checks before ordering, retain identified coupons and compare arrival results with the pre-shipment inspection.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on martensitic stainless steel sheets from China?

The selected heading 7219 lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot. No steel measure, trade remedy, suspension or import control is recorded for those lines.

Should I order annealed or hardened martensitic sheets?

Specify the delivery condition to suit your cutting, forming and heat-treatment process. Agree hardness in that condition and test identified coupons before approving the material.

Can a handheld analyser verify the martensitic grade?

It can support alloy identification, but handheld X-ray fluorescence cannot measure carbon. Use carbon-capable laboratory testing and match results to the sheet's heat number.

What paperwork should accompany the sheets?

Request a mill inspection certificate for each heat, with chemistry, delivery condition and mechanical results. Match it to sheet or bundle labels and retain your inspection records.
