Sourcing manganese sulphate from China

Manganese sulphate from China carries 0% to 4% UK duty: qualifying monohydrate has a suspension, while other forms need classification. The suspension excludes mixtures and preparations. Check your UK REACH position before importing into Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources manganese sulphate.

Monohydrate suspension and other forms

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 2833 covers sulphates, alums and peroxosulphates. Manganese sulphate monohydrate falls under 2833 29 80 20, with a standard duty of 4% and an autonomous suspension at 0.00 %. The suspension excludes mixtures, preparations and products made up of different components containing it. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty for this line.

The tariff attaches an import waste control, plus export controls for waste and dangerous chemicals. Waste shipment controls apply only where the material is waste. For notified waste imported into England from China, the exporter must apply to the Chinese competent authority for consent. Confirm the waste classification and applicable procedure with your customs broker before shipment; ask separately about the listed export controls if returning or re-exporting material.

Other manganese sulphate forms need separate classification; do not apply the monohydrate suspension automatically. The suspension on the residual sulphates line is restricted to specified lithium and zirconium sulphates. Confirm the commodity code using composition and hydrate identity. For wider heading context, see nickel sulphate sourcing.

Specify the hydrate and manganese assay

Write manganese sulphate monohydrate explicitly where that is required. State the intended industrial use, manganese content, sulphate assay and whether results are reported on an as-received or dry basis. Agree limits for moisture, insoluble matter, iron and other process-sensitive impurities, together with test methods and particle size. A grade name alone is not an acceptance specification.

For imports into Great Britain, confirm your UK REACH registration position with HSE before ordering. Safety data sheets are required by UK REACH. Obtain the sheet for the exact material and check its handling information before arranging storage, freight or onward supply. Keep intended use and batch analysis separate from the supplier's general sales description.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 24 tonnes of manganese sulphate monohydrate in 25 kg bags under 2833 29 80 20, invoiced at £4,800 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,300. Duty at 4% is £252. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,552, so it is £1,310.40. Import taxes total £1,562.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £252 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the hydrate, product description and batch number across the purchase order, bags and certificate of analysis.

Analysis: check manganese assay, water content, insolubles and agreed impurity limits using representative samples and the specified methods.

Condition: check for caking, wet liners, torn bags and contamination; compare particle size and dissolution behaviour with the approved sample.

Traceability: check bag weights, seals and pallet markings, then retain a labelled sample from the delivered lot. Arrange independent testing where the process depends on impurity control.

What goes wrong

An assay reported on a dry basis can look acceptable while the delivered material contains more moisture than expected. A certificate for a different batch leaves the shipment unverified. Insoluble matter can interfere with dosing, while moisture ingress causes caking and makes consistent feeding difficult.

Do not release a disputed lot solely because the supplier calls it battery grade or industrial grade. Compare arrival samples with the agreed specification, keep suspect bags separate and request batch-specific results. A mixture containing monohydrate also needs a fresh classification check before claiming its suspension.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on manganese sulphate from China?

Monohydrate under 2833 29 80 20 has 4% standard duty and a 0.00 % suspension excluding mixtures and preparations. Other forms need classification. No trade remedy is listed for the monohydrate line.

Does manganese sulphate need UK REACH registration?

Confirm your UK REACH registration position with HSE before ordering. Confirm coverage rather than relying on the supplier's grade description.

What should a manganese sulphate certificate show?

The exact hydrate, batch number, assay basis, manganese content, water content, insolubles, agreed impurities and test methods. Match it to the delivered bags and verify samples against your specification.

Does the tariff waste control cover new manganese sulphate?

Waste shipment controls apply only if the material is waste. Confirm that status with your broker, especially for recovered or off-specification material; the tariff attaches an import waste control.
