Specify the complete presentation pack
A magnetic rigid gift box combines a board structure, decorative covering and concealed closure. Specify whether it arrives assembled or folds for storage, and send a drawing showing the opening direction. Quote usable internal dimensions around the packed goods, including tissue and ribbon, rather than relying on the outside box size.
List the board construction, covering paper, matte finish, foil colour, logo position, ribbon material and tissue presentation. Approve structure before decorative production
Request an undecorated structural sample to check product fit, lid movement and the space needed to remove the contents. Then approve a decorated sample using the intended materials. Check that the magnet positions align and that the lid stays closed with the real contents inside, including any insert or protective sleeve.
Provide editable artwork with the foil area clearly identified, and confirm whether the decoration is foil stamping or another process. Agree ownership and storage of tooling and approved artwork. Ask the factory for order quantities and production arrangements separately for the box, ribbon and tissue, since these components may come from different suppliers.
UK duty and the right packaging code
The UK Trade Tariff, read on 3 December 2026 for China, showed the candidates below. An assembled rigid packing container points towards the other-container line. A genuine folding carton needs assessment against the folding-box description. Give your customs agent the construction drawing and a photograph showing the box in its imported condition.
Neither line showed anti-dumping or countervailing measures on China. Both listed a conditional ship-use suspension; do not treat that as a general retail-packaging concession. Ask the agent whether separately presented ribbon, tissue and inserts need their own declarations. The code for an empty box should not be assumed to classify a filled gift set.

Packaging obligations and concealed magnets
The Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations 2015 require compliance with essential requirements and regulated-metal limits, supported by technical documentation. Request material details covering the board, covering, coatings and decoration. Keep this evidence alongside the approved construction rather than accepting an unexplained statement that the packaging is compliant.
Supplying imported unfilled packaging is an activity covered by the packaging EPR assessment. Check whether your business is an obligated producer under the government guidance and establish who reports the packaging. Separately, inspect magnet retention and exposed edges. If the design adds play features, arrange a separate product-scope review before approving it.

Inspect appearance and packing performance
Check squareness, lid alignment, corner wrapping, exposed board, glue marks and trapped debris. Compare the matte black surface under consistent lighting, then inspect foil coverage, registration and rubbing resistance. Open and close samples taken from production cartons. A good-looking display sample does not show whether the closure and covering survive normal handling.
Run a packing trial with the actual goods and proposed outer carton, looking for movement, crushed corners and rubbing between boxes. Agree protective packing and defect disposition before shipment. Frequently asked questions
Is a magnetic box always a folding carton?
No. The construction and condition at import matter. A box that folds for storage still needs assessment against the tariff descriptions rather than classification by its marketing name.
Can the box factory supply ribbon and tissue?
Ask the factory which components it makes and which it buys in. Approve the combined pack and agree who is responsible for colour matching and replacements.
Does importing empty packaging avoid EPR?
No automatic exemption follows from the box being empty. Supplying unfilled packaging that you import is a listed packaging activity; assess your business against the government guidance.
