Sourcing battery electrolytes from China
Lithium-ion battery electrolyte solutions in the listed vehicle-battery line carry 6% base UK duty, with a 2.00% suspension entry subject to its conditions. For Great Britain, check UK REACH for constituent substances and classify and label the mixture correctly. Cambridge China Bridge sources lithium-ion battery electrolyte solutions.

Base duty and the electrolyte suspension
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 3824 covers chemical preparations not elsewhere specified. Its motor-vehicle electrolyte line, 3824 99 92 52, carries 6% base duty for China, no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty, and a 2.00% suspension entry. The suspension footnote excludes mixtures, preparations or products made up of different components containing these products. Ask your broker to confirm eligibility. The table shows formulation variants within this same line, subject to its full composition description.
The tariff attaches waste import control. Waste shipment controls apply only to material classed as waste. For imports into England under notification controls, the exporter applies in the dispatch country, and shipment awaits consent from the Environment Agency and other competent authorities. For spent electrolyte from China, confirm the applicable route with your broker before ordering. The snapshot also lists dangerous-chemical, waste and torture/repression export controls; ask your broker to check their relevance before re-export.
Do not assign the vehicle-battery line to every electrolyte solution. Give your broker the complete formulation, component proportions and intended use to confirm the commodity code. For wider heading coverage, see synthetic zeolite molecular sieve beads.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |

Specify the electrolyte recipe and moisture control
Specify the lithium salt, salt concentration, carbonate solvent proportions and additive identities. Agree acceptance limits and test methods for water, acidity, conductivity and metal contamination. Request batch analysis, retained samples and a trial in your intended cell chemistry. Agree container materials, seals, filling conditions, storage instructions and remaining shelf life. Ask the freight provider to assess the actual formulation and packaging before dispatch.
UK REACH registration concerns constituent substances: substances within a mixture must be registered when their aggregated imports reach 1 tonne or more per year. Check the registration position for each constituent before importing. Mixtures placed on the Great Britain market must be classified and labelled under its chemical classification rules. Request an English safety data sheet matching the supplied recipe and review the label against it.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative trial production order: 5 tonnes of motor-vehicle battery electrolyte, using the base duty without claiming suspension under 3824 99 92 52, invoiced at £26,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £28,500. Duty at 6% is £1,710. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £30,210, so it is £6,042. Import taxes total £7,752; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,710 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Composition: compare the batch analysis with the agreed salt, solvent and additive recipe; investigate substituted ingredients.
Moisture and acidity: test a representative sealed sample against the agreed limits and record the sampling method.
Containers: inspect closures, seals, leaks, corrosion and container identification before accepting delivery.
Traceability: match container batch identifiers to analysis records, safety data sheets and manufacture and expiry information. Use the quality inspection guide to brief the inspector.

What goes wrong
A sample can meet the recipe while the shipped batch contains a different solvent ratio or additive package. Moisture ingress, contamination and leaking closures can make the electrolyte unsuitable for the intended cells. Hold affected batches apart from accepted stock and investigate before production use.
A supplier's electrolyte description can also hide a mismatch with the tariff's composition or motor-vehicle use wording. Confirm the code and suspension separately from the technical acceptance decision, and approve formulation changes before dispatch.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on battery electrolyte from China?
The listed motor-vehicle electrolyte line, 3824 99 92 52, has 6% base duty and a 2.00% suspension entry. Confirm its conditions and exclusion footnote with your broker before claiming the lower rate.
Does UK REACH apply to electrolyte mixtures?
Registration concerns the constituent substances. HSE says they must be registered when their aggregated imports reach 1 tonne or more per year. Check each constituent's registration position.
What should I test before using imported electrolyte?
Check the agreed salt concentration, solvent ratios, additives, water, acidity and contamination. Trial an approved batch in your intended cell chemistry and retain a sealed reference sample.
Can I use the vehicle-electrolyte code for every formulation?
Do not assume so. The line specifies ingredients, proportions and motor-vehicle battery manufacture. Give your broker the full recipe and intended use before confirming classification.
