Zero duty on limestone flux

Heading 2521 covers limestone flux and limestone or other calcareous stone of a kind used for manufacturing lime or cement. The table shows different goods descriptions within the same commodity line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 17 November 2026, code 2521 00 00 00 carries 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. It attaches import and export waste controls. Confirm their application to your shipment with your customs broker.

For waste imports to England under notification controls, the Chinese exporter must apply to the competent authority in China for consent. Ask your broker to confirm the complete procedure for the material and destination before loading. Confirm the commodity code using the composition, processing and intended use.

Specify chemistry and kiln feed size

State whether the limestone is for flux, lime manufacture or cement feed. Specify calcium carbonate content, magnesium content, silica, iron and other impurities relevant to your process. Agree the sampling method, test method and whether results are reported on a dry basis.

Set the particle size range, oversize and fines limits, moisture limit and packing method. Request a representative sample from the proposed quarry source and a batch analysis. Assess it in your own process before approving the supply; a colour sample cannot establish chemical suitability.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 25 tonnes of bagged limestone flux under 2521 00 00 00, invoiced at £2,400 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,600, so it is £720. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Chemistry: compare the batch analysis with the agreed composition and independently test retained shipment samples.

Grading: sieve samples from across the load and check oversize pieces, fines and variation between bags.

Condition: check moisture, clay, foreign matter and contamination from previous container cargo.

Packing and identity: check bag seams, net weight, batch marks and correspondence with the quarry and packing records. Use the inspection guide to plan checks.

What goes wrong

A quarry change can alter magnesium, silica or iron content while the stone still looks similar. Excess fines, oversize pieces and wet material can affect handling and kiln feeding. Keep an approved sample and make acceptance depend on batch chemistry and grading.

A supplier may describe recovered material as ordinary quarried limestone. Resolve its waste status and the tariff control before shipment rather than relying on the invoice description. Check the quarry source and processor through factory verification.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on limestone from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% for 2521 00 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

Does the waste control apply to every limestone shipment?

The tariff attaches waste controls. Ask your customs broker to establish the material's status and confirm the requirements for your shipment.

What should I specify for limestone flux?

Specify calcium carbonate, magnesium, silica, iron, particle size, fines, moisture and packing. Agree sampling and analysis methods before ordering.

Can I accept limestone by colour alone?

No. Similar-looking stone can have different chemistry. Compare a representative batch analysis and grading results with your agreed specification.
