Sourcing lead-acid battery plates from China

Lead-acid battery plates from China fall within the general battery-parts line carrying 2% UK duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty listed. HSE guidance tells employers working with lead to keep exposure controls in good working order. Cambridge China Bridge sources lead-acid battery plates.

UK duty on lead-acid battery plates

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 8507 covers electric accumulators and their parts. The relevant general parts line is 8507 90 80 90, carrying 2% duty for goods from China. The table repeats this line for different plate specifications; these are purchasing variants, not separate tariff lines.

No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is listed for this line. Its suspensions describe aluminium sheets and graphite or copper foil products, not lead-acid plates; do not assume a plate order qualifies. The UK Trade Tariff also attaches an export control of mercury. Ask your customs broker to confirm its relevance and any requirement for your goods from China.

Give your broker the plate drawing, composition, formation state and intended battery application to confirm the commodity code. For complete batteries, see sealed lead-acid batteries.

Specify the grid, paste and formation state

Specify positive or negative polarity, flat or tubular construction, grid alloy, plate dimensions, thickness, lug position and approved tolerances. State whether plates are pasted, cured or formed, and agree the condition in which they will arrive. Request batch records for grid composition and active-material loading.

Approve plates through a trial assembly in your intended battery design. Agree how paste adhesion, plate mass, lug joining and electrical performance will be assessed. Ask for composition and handling information, and review the UK REACH position: HSE says substances in articles may require registration where they are intended to be released during use.

HSE guidance for employers working with lead says to keep exposure controls in good working order and provide separate storage for clean and contaminated work clothing. Plan receiving, unpacking and trial assembly around the actual condition of the plates.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: An illustrative trial production batch of positive and negative plates under 8507 90 80 90, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 2% is £252. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,852, so it is £2,570.40. Import taxes total £2,822.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £252 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: check polarity, formation state and batch identification against the order and approved sample.

Dimensions: measure plate thickness, flatness and lug position; check fit in the intended assembly.

Material: compare grid composition records, plate mass and paste coverage with the agreed specification; look for cracks and loose active material.

Packing: check for bent lugs, rubbing damage, moisture and loose powder. Record arrival condition before moving plates into production; use an agreed inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A plate can match the outline drawing yet have the wrong alloy, active-material loading or formation state. Bent lugs complicate joining; uneven thickness affects assembly; weak paste adhesion leaves material in the packaging. Approve the production process and batch acceptance criteria alongside the sample.

Do not treat an assembled-battery test report as proof of a loose plate batch's performance. Keep the supplier's plate records linked to your trial assembly results, and require approval before changes to alloy, paste formulation or formation process.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on lead-acid battery plates from China?

The supplied tariff reading lists 2% on general battery parts under 8507 90 80 90, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm that code for your plate specification.

Can positive and negative plates use the same commodity code?

The supplied facts contain a general battery-parts line rather than separate polarity lines. Ask your broker to confirm classification using drawings, composition and formation state.

Should I buy formed or unformed battery plates?

Match the plate condition to your manufacturing process. Agree who performs formation and how the resulting plates or trial batteries will be accepted.

What should I check when battery plates arrive?

Check batch identity, polarity, dimensions, lug damage, paste adhesion and packing condition. Compare production samples with the approved specification before assembly.
