Sourcing laser projectors from China
Laser image projectors from China carry UK duty from 0% to 14%, depending on their design and function, with a 2% line for other monochrome projectors. For Great Britain, check electrical safety and conformity marking, and follow UK guidance on laser classification. Cambridge China Bridge sources laser projectors.

Laser projector duty depends on function
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8528 covers monitors, image projectors and television reception apparatus. This guide concerns laser image projectors for presentations, venues and home viewing. Describe a beam-effects or pattern-only product separately to your customs broker before selecting an image-projector code.
For goods from China, projectors capable of directly connecting to and designed for use with a computer carry 0% duty. Other monochrome projectors carry 2%, other colour projectors 14%, and television projection equipment 14%. The selected lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.
Ask your customs broker to confirm the commodity code using the technical specification, intended function, computer connectivity and television reception features. Laser illumination alone does not describe those distinctions. The table includes monochrome and television projection lines for comparison where those functions are present. See the wider monitors and projectors guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laser image projectors designed for direct connection to a computer | 8528 62 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Other monochrome image projectors | 8528 69 20 00 | 2% | None |
| Other colour image projectors | 8528 69 80 90 | 14% | None |
| Television projection equipment incorporating television reception | 8528 72 10 00 | 14% | None |
Specify the laser engine, lens and installation
Specify native image resolution, brightness with an agreed measurement method and picture mode, colour performance, throw ratio, projection distance, lens shift and focus adjustment. State the screen type, room lighting, mounting position and intended operating pattern. Distinguish native resolution from the resolution of signals the projector merely accepts.
UK guidance says laser products sold in the UK should be classified in accordance with British standards. Ask for classification evidence for the complete projector, matching its optical engine, lens and enclosure. Agree the supplied warnings and installation instructions, including any viewing-distance or access restrictions identified by the assessment.
For mains-powered models sold in Great Britain, check electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility evidence, CE or UKCA marking and a declaration of conformity. Importers must ensure instructions are in easily understandable English. Hazardous-substance restrictions cover electrical and electronic equipment unless specifically excluded. Radio-equipped models also need radio-equipment checks. Ask for testing and certification support for the finished configuration.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 27 laser image projectors for computer use under 8528 62 00 00, invoiced at £36,000 free on board, with £2,400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £38,400. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £38,400, so it is £7,680. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Image: project test patterns onto the intended screen and check centre and corner focus, colour uniformity, visible speckle, dark patches and alignment against the approved sample.
Optics and safety evidence: match the lens, optical engine, model identification, classification evidence, warning labels and instructions to the supplied projector. Have a competent specialist assess optical safety separately from image inspection.
Operation: test the intended computers and players, signal recovery, remote control and any wireless functions. Run the projector in its intended mounting position and check cooling, fan noise and restart behaviour.
Arrival and packing: inspect lens protection, mounts, case damage and carton cushioning. Check supplied cables, power accessories and manuals before installation. Use the agreed quality inspection brief.

What goes wrong
A sample can look acceptable in a dark room yet disappoint on the buyer's screen. Ambiguous brightness claims, uneven focus, colour differences and visible speckle make comparison difficult. Agree the measurement method, viewing conditions and acceptance criteria before approving production.
A changed lens, optical engine or power supply can leave the delivered model different from the tested sample. Reject unexplained substitutions and ask for evidence covering the shipped configuration. Keep computer connection and television reception features in the specification so your broker can reassess classification before changes are accepted.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on laser projectors from China?
The supplied tariff snapshot shows 0% for computer-designed projectors, 2% for other monochrome projectors and 14% for other colour or television projection equipment, with no trade remedies on these lines.
Does a computer input guarantee zero duty?
The 0% line requires the projector to be capable of directly connecting to and designed for use with a computer. Ask your customs broker to assess the full specification.
What laser safety evidence should I ask the factory for?
UK guidance recommends classification in accordance with British standards. Ask for evidence matching the complete projector, lens and optical engine, together with its warnings and installation instructions.
What should I check before accepting laser projectors?
Check focus across the image, brightness under agreed conditions, colour uniformity, speckle, input compatibility, cooling and packing. Match the supplied model and components to the approved sample and safety evidence.
