Sourcing Large-format Porcelain Slabs from China

Large-format porcelain slabs from China carry 4% UK customs duty. Anti-dumping ranges from 0% for qualifying large formats to a 69.70% residual rate for goods within scope. Check dimensions and surface relief before claiming exclusion, and obtain performance documents for construction use. Cambridge China Bridge sources large-format porcelain slabs.

4% duty and the large-format exclusion

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 6907 covers ceramic paving, hearth and wall tiles, mosaics and finishing ceramics. Porcelain slabs supplied as tiles, with water absorption not exceeding 0.5%, fall under 6907 21 00 00 and carry 4% duty from China. The table shows slab variants sharing that line. No suspension is listed in the snapshot. Confirm the product's form and intended use when finding your commodity code.

The snapshot lists 69.70% residual anti-dumping duty, but qualifying large-format tiles are excluded. An individual tile qualifies where its largest surface exceeds 0.36 square metres or an edge exceeds 600 mm, unless relief on its largest surface exceeds 3 mm. The measure runs until 24 November 2027. For goods remaining within scope, named-exporter rates range from 13.90% to 36.50% with the required invoice. Ask your broker to confirm the exclusion before ordering.

The tariff attaches an import waste control. For waste from China entering England under notification controls, the exporter must apply to the dispatch country's competent authority for consent. Ask your customs broker to confirm whether waste controls apply to your shipment. The snapshot also flags waste export controls and a cultural-object export licence control; confirm their relevance before any onward export. For wider coverage, see ceramic worktop tiles.

Specify the slab and its installation

Agree slab dimensions, thickness, edge finish, permitted bow, surface texture, shade range and vein direction. Supply a cutting layout showing joints, cut-outs and exposed edges. Approve the actual finish and a layout sample rather than relying on a photograph. For floors, specify slip performance; for outdoor applications, request frost-resistance results.

For slabs sold as construction tiles, obtain the manufacturer's declaration of performance and product marking under the construction-product rules. CE marking continues to be recognised for construction products in Great Britain. Match the declared product, finish and intended use to the slabs ordered, and request batch evidence for water absorption and breaking strength.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative shipment of large-format porcelain slabs for a kitchen and bathroom merchant under 6907 21 00 00, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £23,000. Duty at 4% is £920. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £23,920, so it is £4,784. Import taxes total £5,704; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £920 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions and flatness: measure sampled slabs against the agreed tolerances and check bow across the face. Trial adjacent slabs to assess joints and lippage.

Appearance: compare shade and gloss across crates, check vein direction against the layout, and inspect faces and edges for chips, scratches and cracks.

Performance documents: match water-absorption and breaking-strength reports to the supplied product. Check slip results for the actual floor finish and frost results for outdoor use.

Packing and arrival: check supported crates, cushioning, edge protection and restraint. Photograph packing before loading and on arrival, then inspect exposed edges before fabrication. Use the quality inspection guide to organise checks.

What goes wrong

A sample can conceal variation across a full slab. Bow becomes visible at joints, vein patterns fail to align, and mixed production batches produce shade changes across a wall. Handling or transit damage may only become apparent when crates are opened. Agree acceptance criteria and record the batch and crate identities before dispatch.

The customs risk is treating every product described as a slab as automatically excluded from anti-dumping duty. Check individual dimensions and surface relief, particularly for heavily textured faces. Have the broker review the specification and supporting documents before the supplier finalises the shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on porcelain slabs from China?

The tariff snapshot shows 4% customs duty. Qualifying large-format tiles are excluded from anti-dumping duty; goods within scope can attract the 69.70% residual rate or a named-exporter rate.

Do all large-format porcelain slabs avoid anti-dumping duty?

Check each tile: its largest surface must exceed 0.36 square metres or an edge must exceed 600 mm. The exclusion does not apply if relief on the largest surface exceeds 3 mm.

What documents should I request for porcelain wall slabs?

Request the manufacturer's declaration of performance, product marking and test reports matching the supplied product and intended use. Also agree shade, flatness and edge-finish acceptance criteria.

How do I check slabs before cutting them?

Inspect packing and exposed edges on arrival, photograph damage, compare shade and vein direction, and check dimensions and flatness against the order before fabrication.
