A flat 12% across the fibre lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 6114 covers other knitted or crocheted garments. Knitted wrestling singlets within this heading carry 12% duty from China across the listed fibre lines. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is recorded. The table includes alternative fibre constructions; wool and fine animal hair are unusual choices for wrestling singlets.

The tariff attaches cat and dog fur and seal-product import controls, plus corresponding cat and dog fur export controls. Cat and dog fur products cannot be imported. Seal products imported into Great Britain for trade require a seal catch certificate; confirm eligibility with your customs broker before ordering from China. The other-material lines also attach CITES import and export controls. Listed species require permits; ask your broker to confirm the documents for any relevant animal material.

Confirm the commodity code against the garment construction and fibre composition, including blends. The knitted ballet leotards guide covers another garment family within the wider heading. Use the import duty and VAT guide when costing the shipment.

Specify torso fit, stretch and leg openings

Specify the fabric fibre composition, weight, stretch direction, recovery after stretching and washing, and opacity when stretched. Agree torso length, chest, waist, hip, inseam, neckline, armholes and leg-opening measurements for each size. Approve fit samples during a squat and wrestling stance, checking that shoulder straps stay in place and the crotch does not pull.

Define crotch-panel construction, seam type, thread, binding and any leg grippers. Approve team colours, logo placement and printing on the actual fabric. Check the intended competition organiser's kit rules before approving artwork and cut.

Fibre composition must be labelled. Confirm the appropriate fibre names with Trading Standards. Singlets sold in Great Britain must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Agree label artwork, care instructions and size markings, then compare the bulk fabric with the approved sample.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2,000 knitted wrestling singlets of man-made fibres under 6114 30 00 00, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £17,200. Duty at 12% is £2,064. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £19,264, so it is £3,852.80. Import taxes total £5,916.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,064 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure samples from each size against the approved chart; check torso length, strap position and leg openings during movement.

Fabric: check opacity under stretch, recovery after repeated stretching, and shape after washing; compare fibre test results with the label.

Seams: stretch the crotch, side seams and bindings; check for broken stitches, seam opening, rough edges and grippers that twist or detach.

Printing and packing: check logo position on the worn garment, colour transfer after washing and rubbing, size labels and carton contents during inspection.

What goes wrong

A singlet can match the chest measurement yet pull at the shoulders because the torso is too short. Loose leg openings ride up, while tight bindings restrict movement. Seams can burst when the thread or stitch does not stretch with the fabric. Compare bulk garments with the approved fit sample rather than relying on the printed size.

Team graphics can distort when stretched, pale panels can become transparent, and colours can transfer onto adjacent fabric. Ask for printed samples made with the bulk fabric and wash them before approval. Keep an approved sample showing the agreed colours, cut, seams and labels.
