Sourcing isotonic sports drinks from China

Ready-to-drink, non-dairy isotonic sports drinks from China carry 8% UK duty across the usual tariff lines. Ask HMRC to confirm whether added sugar triggers the Soft Drinks Industry Levy for the finished formulation. Health claims must be authorised for Great Britain and meet their conditions of use. Cambridge China Bridge sources isotonic sports drinks.

8% duty on usual non-dairy formulations

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 2202 covers sweetened or flavoured waters and other non-alcoholic beverages, excluding juices of heading 2009. This guide covers ready-to-drink isotonic sports drinks without dairy ingredients. The rows are alternative classifications to assess against the recipe, rather than codes selected by the words ‘sports drink’. Powders for making drinks fall outside this guide.

The selected lines carry 8% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure recorded. Code 2202 99 19 19 has a narrowly defined suspension for a flavoured drink containing 25% nata de coco in 320 ml bottles. It does not give ordinary isotonic drinks a general duty exemption. Soft drinks also attract 20% import VAT; see import duty and VAT.

The tariff attaches organic import control. Confirm inspection certificate requirements for release as organic with your control body and broker; the certificate is issued by the exporter’s control body in the country of export. Confirm the organic import arrangements with your control body and broker. Dairy-containing lines have veterinary control attached; confirm China eligibility and the documents with your broker before ordering any dairy version. Confirm the commodity code using the recipe. See the energy drinks guide for wider heading coverage.

Specify the finished isotonic formulation

Specify carbohydrate sources and content, sodium and other electrolytes, flavour, acidity, juice content, sweeteners and preservatives. Agree a finished-drink osmolality specification and laboratory method, rather than accepting ‘isotonic’ on the supplier’s brochure. Record bottle material, cap design, fill volume, storage conditions and the remaining shelf life you will accept on arrival.

Before approving hydration or exercise claims, check the Great Britain nutrition and health claims register. Only authorised claims may be used, subject to their conditions of use. Review the finished recipe and supporting test results against the chosen claim. Confirm the authorisation status of colours, sweeteners and preservatives for use in Great Britain with the relevant food authority.

Check the Soft Drinks Industry Levy against the finished drink. Ask HMRC to confirm whether the packaged non-alcoholic drink's added sugar and total sugar content make it liable. Specify total sugar separately from total carbohydrate, and have the label, nutrition panel, allergens and any applicable caffeine warning reviewed before printing.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 2,000 cases, each containing 24 bottles of 330 ml isotonic sports drink under 2202 10 00 00, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £18,500. Duty at 8% is £1,480. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £19,980, so it is £3,996. Import taxes total £5,476; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,480 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14 lists beverages among the exceptions that are standard-rated even though most food is zero-rated, so the 20% VAT shown applies.

Inspection checklist

Formulation: compare batch analysis and sampled finished drinks with the agreed carbohydrate, sugar, sodium, electrolyte and osmolality specifications.

Labels: check the approved artwork, ingredient list, allergen emphasis, nutrition panel, UK business details, net quantity, date marking and claim wording.

Packaging: check cap seals, leaks, fill levels, bottle distortion, carton damage and whether sports closures remain secure during handling.

Shelf life: check remaining shelf life and storage records; investigate unexpected sediment, separation, swelling or changed taste. Agree the microbiological testing needed for the formulation and process.

What goes wrong

Replacing sugar with sweeteners changes more than taste. The finished drink may differ from the agreed carbohydrate and osmolality specifications, while the artwork still makes the original hydration claim. A sugar result that differs from the label can also upset levy planning. Approve recipe changes and revised artwork together.

Electrolyte salts can leave an unwanted taste or sediment, and poor preservation can lead to fermentation or swollen packs. Sports caps can leak into cartons even when the bottle looks undamaged. Test the finished drink in its intended packaging and check arrival samples against retained production samples. Use testing and certification support to define the evidence needed.
