Sourcing insulating fuse bodies from China

Insulating fuse carrier bodies from China qualifying under heading 8547 pay 0% UK duty across the relevant material lines. For components imported into Great Britain for further manufacture, official electrical safety guidance says they are not considered placed on the market. 0% duty on qualifying insulating bodies

Heading 8547 covers insulating fittings for electrical equipment, wholly of insulating material except minor metal components incorporated during moulding solely for assembly. This guide covers fuse carrier bodies supplied without conducting contacts. The table shows variants sharing ceramic or plastic codes, rather than separate tariff categories. Any inserts shown must meet that assembly-only condition.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the ceramic line 8547 10 00 00 and plastic line 8547 20 00 00 carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Import VAT is separate from duty.

Send your broker the drawing, material specification, intended function and details of any metal inserts to confirm the commodity code. Do not assume a complete fuse holder with contacts uses the bare body's code. For the wider heading, see ceramic terminal block insulating bodies.

Specify the fuse pocket and mating geometry

Specify ceramic composition or resin grade, fuse pocket dimensions, locating shoulders, contact recesses, mounting holes and mating surfaces. State tolerances, permitted insert construction and whether the order contains bare bodies only. Provide the mating base and intended fuse for sample approval.

Agree operating temperature, dielectric strength, tracking resistance and flammability performance for the intended assembly. Ask for reports matching the material grade and supplied geometry. Specify how ceramic edges are protected in packing and how plastic locating features are kept from deforming.

Official electrical safety guidance treats products imported into Great Britain for further manufacture or processing as not yet placed on the market. Official hazardous-substance guidance excludes component parts sold business-to-business from its scope. Confirm the finished product's requirements with the relevant product-safety authority, and obtain material declarations and supporting reports for the assembler.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of plastic insulating fuse carrier bodies for an electrical assembler under 8547 20 00 00, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £700 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,700. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,700, so it is £3,140. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match ceramic or resin certificates to the approved grade and production batch; check that supporting test reports describe the supplied material.

Fit: measure fuse pockets, locating shoulders and mounting features against the drawing; trial-fit bodies with the approved fuse and mating base.

Condition: inspect ceramic recesses and edges for cracks or chips, and plastic bodies for warping, voids and flash; check assembly inserts for movement.

Performance and packing: arrange the agreed insulation tests, distinguish variants on carton labels and check that packing protects brittle edges and locating features.

What goes wrong

A body can match the outside dimensions yet have a misplaced contact recess or shallow fuse pocket. Flash can obstruct assembly, warped shoulders can prevent seating, and chipped ceramic edges can undermine the agreed fit. Check the assembled sample as well as the drawing.

Material substitution can change heat resistance, flammability or tracking performance. Loose inserts and hidden cracks can escape a visual check. Retain approved samples, require approval before material changes and organise batch checks using the quality inspection guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on insulating fuse carrier bodies from China?

Qualifying ceramic bodies under 8547 10 00 00 and plastic bodies under 8547 20 00 00 carry 0% duty. The supplied record lists no trade remedy, suspension or attached import control.

Does a complete fuse holder use the same commodity code?

Do not assume so. This guide covers insulating bodies without conducting contacts. Give your broker the complete assembly drawing, materials and function before confirming its code.

Are business-to-business insulating bodies covered by hazardous-substance rules?

Official Great Britain guidance excludes component parts sold business-to-business from that scope. Confirm the finished product's requirements and obtain material evidence for its assembler.

How do I check that a fuse carrier body fits?

Measure the fuse pocket, contact recesses, locating shoulders and mounting features. Trial-fit approved samples with the intended fuse and mating base, then compare bulk goods with those samples.
