Sourcing inflatable seals from China

Inflatable elastomeric seals from China normally pay 2% UK duty as rubber seals. A narrowly defined gasket suspension gives 0% only when its conditions are met. Check applicable chemical restrictions and specify the installed sealing gap. Cambridge China Bridge sources inflatable elastomeric seals.

Normally 2% duty on rubber seals

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 17 October 2026, heading 4016 covers articles of vulcanised rubber other than hard rubber. Plain rubber seals are covered by 4016 93 00 90. The table includes neighbouring descriptions for comparison; being inflatable does not by itself settle classification.

The listed comparison lines carry 2% duty on goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures or attached import controls in the supplied snapshot. The seal line has a 0.00 % suspension restricted to specified rectangular ethylene-propylene-diene rubber gaskets. Do not budget that relief for a general inflatable seal without confirming the description and exclusions.

Send the broker the compound specification, cross-section, valve details, photographs and intended sealing function to confirm the commodity code. For composite gaskets and mechanical shaft seals, see the wider gaskets and seals guide.

Specify the inflated profile and installed gap

Specify the rubber compound, hardness, uninflated cross-section, inflated travel, groove dimensions, corner radii and joint position. State inflation pressure, process pressure, operating temperature, cleaning chemicals and contact media. Agree valve connection, stem orientation, pressure-hold acceptance and repeated inflation testing in the actual mounting arrangement.

REACH restrictions can limit, ban or set conditions on substances in articles. Ask for compound identification and evidence addressing applicable restrictions rather than accepting a generic compliance statement. For food-contact applications, agree testing with the laboratory against the actual food, temperature and cleaning conditions.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of custom inflatable elastomeric replacement seals under 4016 93 00 90, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £16,500. Duty at 2% is £330. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £16,830, so it is £3,366. Import taxes total £3,696; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £330 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Profile: measure the section, loop dimensions and corners against the approved drawing; fit the seal into the intended groove.

Air retention: inflate at the agreed pressure and hold time; record pressure loss and check the valve, stem bond and joined ends for leaks.

Movement: check uniform expansion, contact across the sealing gap and full retraction after deflation; repeat with the intended fixture.

Material and packing: match batch identification to the compound and test records; inspect for cracks, tackiness and permanent creases. Use the inspection guide to brief the inspector.

What goes wrong

A seal can hold air on the bench yet leak in its groove because the inflated profile cannot bridge the gap or buckles at corners. Joined ends and valve bonds can leak, while incompatible cleaning chemicals can swell or harden the compound.

Approve a sample in the actual fixture before releasing production. Agree how the factory will record pressure retention and retraction for the shipment, and pack loops without sharp folds or loads on the valve stem.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on inflatable rubber seals from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot gives 2% for 4016 93 00 90. Its 0.00 % suspension is limited to specified rectangular rubber gaskets, not inflatable seals generally.

Which commodity code covers an inflatable seal?

4016 93 00 90 covers other rubber seals. Confirm the construction and sealing function with your broker; do not select the inflatable-articles line solely because the seal inflates.

How should I test inflatable seals before shipment?

Check pressure retention, valve and joint leakage, expansion across the installed gap and retraction after deflation. Use the intended groove and agreed operating conditions.

What should I ask for with food-contact seals?

Request the exact compound identity and test evidence for the intended food, contact temperature and cleaning conditions. Agree the assessment with a laboratory before production.
