Sourcing ignition distributor caps from China

Ignition distributor caps from China carry 2% UK duty when classified as other ignition equipment parts, with no additional trade remedy shown. Caps intended or likely to be used by consumers must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Confirm fitment and insulation. Cambridge China Bridge sources ignition distributor caps.

UK duty on distributor caps

Heading 8511 covers engine ignition and starting equipment, generators used with those engines, and parts. For a separately supplied distributor cap, start by checking the other-parts line, 8511 90 00 90. A complete distributor is a different product. The table includes related ignition equipment for comparison; these are not separate cap classifications.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the other-parts line carried 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control on that line. The other comparison lines in the table also carry 2%. Suspensions for specified equipment elsewhere in the heading do not describe distributor caps.

Confirm the commodity code using the cap drawing, material specification and intended engine application before shipment. For complete assemblies, see engine ignition distributors.

Specify the cap, contacts and distributor fit

Specify the distributor reference and engine applications, cap seating diameter and height, locating features, clip or screw positions, terminal layout and ignition-lead connections. Agree the insulating material, contact metal, centre carbon brush and spring arrangement, and whether seals or fixings are included. Keep an approved sample and drawing for each part reference.

For caps intended or likely to be used by consumers in Great Britain, general product safety rules require safety in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Ask the factory for insulation and heat-resistance test evidence tied to the actual cap material and design. Agree test conditions with your technical adviser through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order, not a quotation: 2,000 ignition distributor caps under 8511 90 00 90, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 2% is £252. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,852, so it is £2,570.40. Import taxes total £2,822.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £252 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: seat samples on the specified distributor body, engage the clips or screws, fit the leads and check rotor clearance against the approved assembly.

Contacts: check terminal position and security, contact material against the specification, and free movement and spring return of the centre carbon brush.

Insulation: inspect inside and outside for cracks, voids, flash and contamination; check agreed insulation test results and retain samples from the shipment.

Packing: check part references, application lists and batch identification; protect terminals and brittle mouldings during transport. Arrange quality inspection by cap reference rather than carton appearance.

What goes wrong

A cap can resemble the approved sample but have a different locating notch, terminal arrangement or seating depth. It may clip into place while leaving poor rotor clearance or loose lead connections. Compare production samples with the actual distributor body and rotor before accepting the batch.

Cracked mouldings, loose inserts and a sticking centre brush can cause poor ignition contact. Moisture, contamination or weak insulation can allow tracking and misfires. Record failures against the cap reference and batch, and hold affected stock while the cause is investigated.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on distributor caps from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 2% on 8511 90 00 90, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. Confirm that the separate cap belongs on this parts line.

Can I order distributor caps using a vehicle model name?

Use the distributor reference as well as the engine application. Agree a drawing and sample covering locating features, fixings, terminal layout and rotor clearance.

What should I test on distributor caps?

Check fit on the intended distributor, terminal security and centre brush movement. Agree insulation and heat-resistance tests for the actual material and design.

Can distributor caps carry another manufacturer's brand?

Do not accept another company's trade mark without permission. Fitment cross-references should not suggest that the cap was manufactured by that brand.
