Zero duty on prepared staining reagents

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3822 covers prepared diagnostic or laboratory reagents, including kits, and certified reference materials. All listed lines carry 0% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures or suspensions recorded. The table shows staining preparations sharing the other prepared-reagent line; these are product examples, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

For 3822 90 00 00, the tariff attaches Veterinary control and Restriction on entry into free circulation concerning ozone-depleting substances. For animal-derived formulations from China, confirm the veterinary requirement with your customs broker before dispatch. If goods qualify as research and diagnostic samples, follow APHA's published import conditions. Importing regulated ozone-depleting substances into Great Britain requires a licence; check the solvent composition rather than assuming every stain needs one.

Confirm the commodity code using the complete formulation, preparation and intended use. Do not extend the table's classification automatically to unmixed dyes, solvents or every accompanying chemical. The diagnostic and laboratory reagents guide covers the wider heading.

Specify the stain and its intended use

Specify the staining method, dye identity and concentration, solvent, acidity, filtration, pack size and compatibility with your manual process or automated stainer. For haematoxylin, agree the formulation and whether the process is progressive or regressive. For kits, list every reagent and the staining sequence. Agree acceptance images using representative tissue and control slides.

Settle diagnostic or research-only status before approving labels. For reagents intended for diagnosis, confirm their in vitro diagnostic medical-device status and applicable UKCA or CE marking requirements with MHRA. An overseas manufacturer must appoint a UK Responsible Person to register and act on its behalf. For research-only reagents, confirm the applicable labelling, sales and diagnostic-claim requirements with MHRA.

For chemical supplies, correctly labelled and packaged substances and mixtures are required before market placement. Ask for an English safety data sheet matching the actual formulation, a batch certificate of analysis and storage instructions. Agree remaining shelf life at delivery and evidence supporting unopened and in-use stability.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 500 histology staining kits, illustrative only under 3822 19 00 90, invoiced at £5,000 free on board, with £300 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,300. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,300, so it is £1,060. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: check reagent names, formulation references, batch numbers and kit contents against the approved specification and certificate of analysis.

Staining performance: compare control slides with the approved images for nuclear detail, cytoplasmic contrast, background staining and unwanted deposits.

Containers: check seals, leakage, fill quantity, sediment and crystallisation against the agreed acceptance criteria; inspect every kit component.

Documents and storage: check expiry dates, English instructions, applicable diagnostic documents and transport records against the stated storage conditions. Arrange quality inspection around these checks.

What goes wrong

A sample can stain well while the supplied batch gives weak nuclei, excessive background or deposits. Changes in dye strength, acidity, filtration or solvent can alter the result. Approve the formulation and tissue-control results together, retain a reference sample and investigate differences before releasing the batch.

Leaking closures, missing kit components and short remaining shelf life can make stock unusable. A research-only label also creates a problem if the intended sale is diagnostic. Resolve the intended use, documents and packaging before production, then check the shipment against that agreement.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on histology stains from China?

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all listed heading 3822 lines carry 0% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Confirm that your preparation belongs in this heading.

Do histology staining reagents need CE or UKCA marking?

For diagnostic use in Great Britain, confirm the applicable in vitro diagnostic device route, CE or UKCA marking and MHRA registration requirements with MHRA. For research-only products, confirm the applicable labelling and sales requirements with MHRA.

What should I test before ordering a staining reagent?

Run the proposed formulation on representative tissue and control slides using your actual staining process. Agree nuclear detail, contrast, background and deposit acceptance criteria before approving the sample.

Do all histology stains need refrigerated shipping?

Specify transport from the formulation's documented storage conditions and stability evidence. Check the manufacturer's instructions and agree how transport conditions will be recorded.
