Sourcing gas circuit breakers from China
High-voltage gas circuit breakers from China carry 2% UK duty in both voltage bands, with no trade remedies recorded. Sulphur hexafluoride equipment needs F-gas labelling and qualified servicing. Check the gas, ratings and matching type tests before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources high-voltage gas circuit breakers.

2% duty on gas circuit breakers
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8535 covers switching and protection apparatus for voltages above 1,000 V. Gas circuit breakers fall within its automatic circuit-breaker lines, split at 72.5 kV. The table also includes associated isolating and make-and-break switches when supplied separately; these are different goods from circuit breakers.
Both circuit-breaker lines and the associated switch lines carry 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for these lines. It attaches an export control of mercury to each line; ask your customs broker to confirm the relevant requirement. The associated switch lines also carry an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases; confirm the applicable customs documents with your broker before shipping.
Imported equipment containing regulated F gas must be labelled. Confirm the gas composition and whether the breaker ships filled or empty. Match its function and voltage to the commodity code guide. For related products within the heading, see medium-voltage vacuum circuit breakers.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gas circuit breakers above 1,000 V and below 72.5 kV | 8535 21 00 90 | 2% | None |
| Gas circuit breakers for 72.5 kV or more | 8535 29 00 90 | 2% | None |
| Associated isolating and make-and-break switches below 72.5 kV | 8535 30 10 90 | 2% | None |
| Associated isolating and make-and-break switches for 72.5 kV or more | 8535 30 90 90 | 2% | None |
Specify the gas, breaking duty and mechanism
Specify rated voltage, continuous current, short-circuit breaking duty, insulation performance, operating sequence and installation environment. Record the gas composition, filling condition, operating pressure, density-monitor alarm settings and gas connection fittings. Identify whether the gas provides insulation, interruption or both, rather than accepting a description of gas-insulated equipment alone.
Specify circuit-breaker test evidence against BS EN 62271 part 100. Match the type-tested design, interrupter, operating mechanism and ratings to the offered equipment. Agree routine tests, control voltages, interlocks, terminal drawings and spare seals before ordering. Confirm the network operator or buyer's engineer approval route.
Confirm with the relevant product-safety authority whether the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 apply to the breaker or its auxiliary equipment. A scope exclusion does not establish acceptance of either. Arrange testing and certification checks, and use qualified personnel for work on switchgear containing sulphur hexafluoride.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 gas circuit breakers for 11 kV networks under 8535 21 00 90, invoiced at £120,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £124,000. Duty at 2% is £2,480. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £126,480, so it is £25,296. Import taxes total £27,776; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,480 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match nameplates, serial numbers, ratings and mechanism details to the purchase specification and the test reports.
Gas system: check the recorded filling condition, gas quantity label, density-monitor indication, sealed fittings and factory leak-test results; compare arrival readings with the manufacturer's instructions.
Operation: witness agreed mechanical operations, trip and close functions, interlocks and contact-resistance tests; check auxiliary wiring against the approved drawings.
Arrival: inspect bushings, flanges, cabinets and crates for cracks, movement and moisture. Record damage before unpacking further and reconcile accessories with the packing list.

What goes wrong
A report for a different interrupter or mechanism does not establish the supplied breaker's performance. Gas leakage, damaged bushings, incorrect control voltage and mismatched interlocks can prevent commissioning. Treat changes to the gas or sealing arrangement as specification changes requiring the buyer's engineer to review the supporting evidence.
Do not treat topping up a leaking unit as an arrival-inspection task. Work on sulphur hexafluoride switchgear requires appropriate qualifications, and the gas must be recovered during servicing and before disposal of decommissioned equipment. Agree the servicing and recovery arrangements before shipment.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on gas circuit breakers from China?
The supplied tariff data shows 2% for both circuit-breaker voltage bands, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension on those lines.
Which commodity code covers high-voltage gas circuit breakers?
For apparatus above 1,000 V, the supplied lines are 8535 21 00 90 below 72.5 kV and 8535 29 00 90 at 72.5 kV or more. Confirm the function and voltage from the datasheet.
Does sulphur hexafluoride equipment need special labels?
Yes. Imported products containing regulated F gas must be labelled. Obtain the gas identification and quantity information, and check the label against the supplied equipment.
What should I check before accepting a gas circuit breaker?
Match the type tests to the exact design and ratings. Check routine-test results, gas condition, mechanism operation, control wiring and arrival damage against the agreed specification.
