Sourcing high-purity neon gas from China

High-purity neon gas from China pays 4% UK import duty under 2804 29 90 00, with no recorded trade remedy or suspension. Cylinders must be approved transportable pressure equipment, and gas supplied in Great Britain needs compliant classification and labelling. Cambridge China Bridge sources high-purity neon gas.

Neon duty and cylinder checks

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, high-purity neon falls within heading 2804, covering hydrogen, rare gases and other non-metals. Neon uses the other rare gases line, 2804 29 90 00, at 4% duty for goods from China. The supplied record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for this line. All table entries share this commodity code and distinguish supply formats.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches waste import and export controls to this line. Ask your customs broker to confirm their applicability and the documents required for your shipment from China. If the shipment is waste subject to notification controls and enters England, the exporter must apply to the competent authority in the country of dispatch for consent. Confirm the requirements before shipping.

Confirm the gas composition and cylinder arrangements using finding your commodity code. Gas cylinders may need separate classification if they are not returned. For other products within the heading, see industrial gases and silicon.

Specify impurities, fill quantity and valve outlet

Write the intended use and agreed neon purity into the purchase specification. Set individual limits for moisture, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and other rare gases relevant to your process. Ask for measured results, test methods and detection limits on the batch certificate of analysis. Agree whether the certificate covers the production batch or the actual cylinder fill.

Specify the gas quantity and its reference conditions, filling pressure, cylinder capacity, valve outlet and regulator connection. Agree cylinder ownership, return arrangements and responsibility for rejected fills. Ask the supplier how cylinders are cleaned, dried and protected from contamination during filling.

Cylinders must be approved transportable pressure equipment. For new cylinders supplied directly from China for the Great Britain market, check the Rho marking and supporting approval documents before shipment. Gas supplied in Great Britain must be classified and labelled under its chemical classification rules; importers also have packaging duties. Obtain the safety data sheet and dangerous goods paperwork for review.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small trial consignment of high-purity neon gas cylinders under 2804 29 90 00, invoiced at £4,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £8,000. Duty at 4% is £320. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £8,320, so it is £1,664. Import taxes total £1,984; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £320 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Batch identity: match cylinder serial numbers, fill references and gas labels to the packing list and certificate of analysis.

Impurity results: compare reported moisture and other contaminants with the agreed limits; check that detection limits are suitable for deciding acceptance.

Cylinders and valves: check approval markings, periodic inspection stamps, valve outlets, caps and guards; record dents, corrosion and damaged connections.

Arrival acceptance: have a competent gas specialist check leakage and delivered quantity, and arrange agreed purity testing before releasing the gas to your process. Record findings through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A total purity claim can hide an impurity that matters to your process. A certificate for bulk production may also fail to establish the condition of the delivered fill. Moisture contamination, unsuitable valve outlets and damaged valve protection can leave an otherwise acceptable gas shipment unusable.

Agree sampling, acceptance and rejection arrangements before ordering. Keep cylinder identity linked to the analysis results, and resolve missing approval documents before dispatch. If arrival results differ from the certificate, hold the affected cylinders for specialist assessment and document the discrepancy.
