Sourcing high-purity methane gas from China
High-purity methane gas from China carries 0% UK duty across the relevant gaseous and liquefied lines of heading 2711. Hazardous gas supplied for work needs a safety data sheet, and new transportable cylinders placed on the Great Britain market need Rho marking. Cambridge China Bridge sources high-purity methane gas.

Methane classification and zero duty
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 2711 covers petroleum gases and other gaseous hydrocarbons. The gaseous natural gas, other gaseous hydrocarbons, liquefied natural gas and other liquefied hydrocarbons lines all carry 0% duty for goods from China. These are classification candidates, rather than interchangeable codes for high-purity methane.
The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls on these lines. The wider heading includes an 8% propane fuel line; that is not the methane rate. See the bulk propane guide for the wider heading.
Give your customs broker the composition, production origin, intended use and physical state at import to confirm the commodity code. A purity grade alone does not identify which tariff description fits. Keep the confirmed description consistent across the invoice, analysis certificate and shipping documents.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other gaseous hydrocarbons | 2711 29 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Natural gas in gaseous state | 2711 21 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Other liquefied hydrocarbons | 2711 19 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Liquefied natural gas | 2711 11 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify methane impurities and cylinder compatibility
Specify methane assay and separate limits for moisture, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, sulphur compounds and other hydrocarbons. Agree the analytical method, reporting units and detection limits. Ask whether purity is measured directly or calculated by subtracting impurities. For calibration work, specify the assigned composition and uncertainty rather than accepting a general purity certificate.
Specify cylinder material, internal preparation, valve outlet, regulator compatibility, fill pressure and usable gas quantity. Request filling records and analysis linked to the supplied cylinders. Agree whether cylinders are purchased or returned, and ask your carrier and receiving site to review the proposed shipment before ordering.
Hazardous chemicals supplied for work require a safety data sheet. Those supplying chemicals are responsible for correct labelling and packaging before placing them on the market. For new transportable cylinders placed on the Great Britain market, check Rho marking and request the corresponding conformity documents. Ask your chemical adviser to confirm the UK REACH position for the exact substance and origin.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 20 cylinders of high-purity methane gas, assuming this code is confirmed under 2711 29 00 00, invoiced at £4,000 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,800, so it is £1,160. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Analysis: match the certificate to the filling batch and cylinder identifiers; compare every agreed impurity limit and check that the method can detect it.
Cylinders: check markings, conformity documents, inspection records, valve protection and visible damage against the approved cylinder specification.
Connections: check valve outlet and regulator compatibility; have trained personnel perform the agreed leak and pressure checks.
Receiving site: employers must assess workplace fire and explosion risks from dangerous substances. Review the methane handling assessment before arrival, including ventilation, ignition sources and the unloading location.

What goes wrong
A headline purity claim can conceal moisture or oxygen above the buyer's limits. Residues in reused cylinders, inadequate drying or contamination during filling can make gas unsuitable for sensitive instruments. A generic certificate may describe the producer's grade without proving the contents of the delivered cylinders.
Wrong valve outlets, missing conformity documents and discrepancies between cylinder identifiers and certificates can prevent acceptance. Agree the analysis and cylinder documents before dispatch, then arrange independent testing and certification checks where the application warrants them. Keep suspect cylinders separate pending assessment.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on high-purity methane gas from China?
The relevant gaseous and liquefied lines of heading 2711 carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff record, read on 30 September 2026. Confirm the exact code from the gas's composition, origin and physical state.
Is a methane purity certificate enough?
Ask for individual impurity results, analytical methods and detection limits, linked to the filling batch and supplied cylinders. A general grade certificate does not establish the contents of each delivery.
Can I accept any Chinese methane cylinder?
Check the proposed cylinder before ordering. New transportable cylinders placed on the Great Britain market need Rho marking. Also review conformity documents, valve compatibility and inspection records.
Does methane supplied to a business need a safety data sheet?
Hazardous chemicals supplied for use at work require a safety data sheet. Obtain it before dispatch and use it alongside the receiving site's handling assessment.
