Duty on replacement hard-hat harnesses

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 6507 covers headbands, linings, covers, hat foundations, hat frames, peaks and chinstraps for headgear. This guide concerns suspension harnesses supplied separately for hard hats. The table shows buying variants within the supplied commodity line, rather than separate tariff codes.

The supplied line carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension listed. The tariff attaches cat and dog fur import and export controls and seal-product import controls. Cat and dog fur products are banned from import and export. Seal products for sale in Great Britain must qualify under the Inuit or other indigenous communities exemption and have a seal catch certificate. Specify synthetic materials and confirm any animal-derived padding with your customs broker.

Confirm the commodity code against the complete harness, its materials and how it is supplied before shipment. For another product family within the wider heading, see textile helmet linings.

Helmet interfaces, crown straps and conformity

Specify the compatible helmet manufacturer and model, attachment layout, clip geometry, crown strap material and routing, headband adjustment, wearing height and sweatband construction. Send the factory the intended helmet shell and approve the harness fitted inside it. Agree packing that prevents clips and adjustment mechanisms being distorted.

Interchangeable components essential to protective function are within protective equipment scope. For replacement harnesses sold in Great Britain, review the applicable conformity assessment, technical documentation, CE or UKCA marking, declaration and English instructions. Official guidance allows genuine spare parts to follow the conformity requirements applicable when the original product was placed on the market; retain evidence of intended spare-part use. Use testing and certification support to review the route and document coverage.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative stock order of ratchet-adjusted hard-hat suspension harnesses for a workwear supplier under 6507 00 00 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,900, so it is £1,980. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Attachment: fit samples to the specified helmet shell; check every clip seats fully, stays engaged and matches the approved geometry without trimming or forcing.

Adjustment: check the headband moves through the agreed range, locks consistently and does not slip; compare wearing height and crown clearance with the approved fitted sample.

Straps and padding: check strap routing, stitching, fraying, moulding cracks and sharp edges; compare sweatband material, fastening and position with the specification.

Identification and packing: match model and batch identification to the supplied documents; check fitting instructions and cartons for crushed clips, damp padding or mixed variants. Use the quality inspection guide to brief inspection.

What goes wrong

A harness can resemble the original while its clips fit a different shell. Changed crown strap lengths or attachment positions can alter how the helmet sits. Ratchet teeth may skip, sliding adjusters may loosen, and poorly finished strap edges can irritate the wearer. Compare production samples in the intended helmet, rather than approving loose harnesses by appearance.

A report for a complete helmet does not establish coverage for every replacement harness offered by a supplier. Ask for evidence identifying the harness and intended helmet combination, and investigate changes to clips, straps or adjusters before accepting stock. Keep visually acceptable goods on hold if compatibility or document coverage remains unresolved.
