A handheld circular saw with its motor housing and circular blade guard.

UK duty on handheld circular saws

Heading 8467 covers tools for working in the hand, including tools with a self-contained electric motor. Electric handheld circular saws fall under 8467 22 30 00. The table shows buying configurations sharing this code, rather than separate tariff lines. For separately sourced cutting consumables, see the circular wood-cutting saw blade guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 21 November 2026, electric circular saws from China carry 2% duty. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for this code. The wider heading's duty range is 0% to 2%.

Give your customs broker the saw's operating method, power supply, photographs and shipment contents. Distinguish complete handheld saws from stationary machines, separate blades and spare parts. Confirm the classification using finding your commodity code.

Specify the blade, cutting depth and guide system

Specify the intended material, blade diameter, bore, kerf, rotation direction and permitted blade speed. Define cutting depth for square and bevel cuts, bevel adjustment, baseplate flatness and blade position relative to the cut indicator. Distinguish a conventional retracting-guard saw from a plunge saw, and name any required guide-rail system.

State the extraction connector, cable and plug, or battery platform and charger. Agree a loaded cutting trial using the intended material and blade. Compare cut straightness, edge breakout, speed loss, heat and handling with an approved sample. Include replacement guards, baseplates and service parts in the supplier discussion.

For Great Britain, obtain the exact model's declaration of conformity, English instructions, conformity marking and supporting technical evidence. CE marking continues to be recognised indefinitely for machinery in Great Britain. Check which electrical, electromagnetic compatibility and battery obligations apply to the supplied configuration. Electrical-equipment producers must register annually.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small-business batch of mains-powered handheld circular saws; FOB and freight values are illustrative under 8467 22 30 00, invoiced at £2,025 free on board, with £468 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,493. Duty at 2% is £49.86. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,542.86, so it is £508.57. Import taxes total £558.43; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £49.86 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Guard and controls: with the power isolated, check guard movement and return, blade enclosure, trigger action and locking mechanisms against the approved sample.

Blade and baseplate: check bore fit, flange seating, rotation direction, baseplate flatness, guide-rail fit and the security of depth and bevel locks.

Loaded cutting trial: have a competent operator cut the agreed material using the intended blade and extraction setup; inspect straightness, edge breakout, speed loss, heat and dust leakage.

Identity and configuration: match the model to its declaration, English instructions and reports; inspect the supplied plug, cable, battery connection and charger against the order.

What goes wrong

A rail-compatible claim can conceal a loose fit or a different rail profile. A flexing baseplate, slipping bevel lock or misaligned cut indicator can produce inaccurate cuts despite an acceptable no-load demonstration. Keep an approved sample and repeat the same cutting trial on production tools.

A sticking guard, poorly seated blade flange or substituted charger needs investigation before acceptance. Another model's report does not establish evidence for the delivered saw. Separate blade selection from saw selection, and agree how failed tools and unavailable spare parts will be handled.
