Duty and classification for gypsum ceiling tiles

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 6809 covers articles of plaster or compositions based on plaster. The relevant unornamented board and tile lines carry 0% duty from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duties and no suspensions. The table shows product variants sharing tariff lines.

Both relevant lines attach waste import and export controls. For waste from China entering England under notification controls, shipment requires consent from the authorities of dispatch, destination and transit. Ask your customs broker to confirm the requirement for your shipment of new tiles; do not assume the tariff entry makes new tiles waste.

Confirm the gypsum composition, facing, reinforcement and whether the tile is ornamented before choosing the commodity code. Paper or paperboard must be the only facing or reinforcement for the paper-only line. See the wider plaster products guide for other products within this heading.

Specify the tile and its tested ceiling assembly

Specify tile dimensions, thickness, weight, edge profile, ceiling-grid compatibility, perforation pattern, finish and acoustic backing. Agree a physical sample that fits the intended grid. State whether tiles lift out individually or form a jointed ceiling, and identify any insulation or air space used behind them.

Ask for acoustic reports matching the offered tile, backing and installation arrangement. Separate sound absorption within a room from sound insulation between spaces. Agree the reaction-to-fire performance the project needs and check the supporting documents cover the supplied finish and backing.

Ask the relevant authority to confirm whether the product falls within a designated construction product standard and what declaration of performance and CE or UKCA marking requirements apply. CE marking continues to be recognised for construction products in Great Britain. Confirm the applicable product standard rather than assuming every gypsum ceiling tile is ordinary plasterboard.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 1,500 unornamented fibre-reinforced gypsum acoustic ceiling tiles under 6809 19 00 00, invoiced at £7,500 free on board, with £2,400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,900, so it is £1,980. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure sampled tiles against the agreed drawing, check squareness and edge profiles, and trial-fit them in the intended ceiling grid.

Acoustic construction: check perforation size and spacing against the sample, clear blocked holes, and inspect backing attachment and continuity.

Surface and packing: inspect for chipped edges, cracks, bowing, stains and damp packaging; check flat stacking, corner protection and pallet restraint.

Documents: match product identity, finish and backing to the performance documents and acoustic reports. Photograph arrival damage before moving stock and use the inspection guide to brief the checks.

What goes wrong

Tiles can fit the nominal grid size yet sit badly because the edge rebate or squareness differs from the sample. Broken corners, bowed tiles and moisture stains make a ceiling uneven. Inspect production samples in the actual grid and agree packaging that protects both the visible face and the supporting edges.

A supplier may quote an acoustic result for a different backing or ceiling arrangement. Paint can obstruct perforations, while loose backing changes the supplied construction. Approve the complete assembly and keep its description consistent across the order, samples and reports.

How do I check a supplier's acoustic claim?

Ask for a report matching the tile, perforations, backing and installation arrangement. Check whether it measures room sound absorption or sound insulation between spaces.

How do I prevent gypsum ceiling tiles arriving broken?

Agree flat stacking, protected faces and corners, and restrained pallets. Inspect packed production tiles before dispatch and photograph cracked tiles or damp packaging on arrival.
