Guitar capo duty and material controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 November 2026, heading 9209 covers musical instrument parts and accessories. The acoustic string-instrument accessory line and the electric-instrument accessory line both carry 2% duty from China. The table repeats the acoustic accessory code for different capo designs; these are product variants, not separate tariff lines. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is recorded for these lines.

The tariff attaches ivory import control and CITES import control to these accessory lines. For ivory items intended for dealing, ask your customs broker to confirm any applicable registration or exemption requirements, eligibility and import documents before ordering. For CITES-listed materials, permits are required for species listed in Annex A, B or C; confirm the material's listing and applicable import procedure with your broker.

Confirm the commodity code against the actual capo, intended instrument and materials rather than accepting a supplier's generic accessory code. See the instrument strings and accessories guide for the wider heading.

Specify neck fit and clamp pressure

State whether the capo is for a curved steel-string fingerboard or a flatter classical fingerboard. Specify jaw opening, usable pad width, pad profile, body material, finish and the spring, screw or strap mechanism. Agree the target guitar models and fret positions for sample testing.

Specify the pad material, attachment and replacement arrangement. Approve a sample that clamps without buzzing, excessive pitch change or marks on the neck. Confirm applicable product-safety requirements with the relevant authority; request the supplier's restricted-substance statement for plating and finishes.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 400 acoustic guitar capos; values are illustrative, not a quotation. under 9209 92 00 00, invoiced at £2,400 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,300. Duty at 2% is £66. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,366, so it is £673.20. Import taxes total £739.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £66 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: try samples on the agreed guitars and fret positions; check jaw clearance and even contact across the strings.

Sound: compare tuning before and after clamping, play each string and listen for buzzing or muted notes.

Mechanism: operate the clamp repeatedly; check spring consistency, screw threads, strap grip, sharp edges and pinch points.

Pads and packing: check pad adhesion, exposed metal, finish transfer and cushioning; on arrival, inspect for detached pads, corrosion and carton damage.

What goes wrong

A pad with the wrong curve leaves some strings buzzing while over-compressing others. Excessive pressure pulls notes sharp; weak pressure allows slipping. Poorly bonded pads detach and expose metal to the guitar finish, while rough screws or inconsistent springs make adjustment unreliable.

Approve fit and playing performance on the intended guitars, retain the approved sample and compare production against it. Include pad adhesion and finish-contact checks in the inspection brief.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on guitar capos from China?

The relevant accessory lines, 9209 92 00 00 and 9209 94 00 00, carry 2% duty from China. Confirm which fits the actual product. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded.

Will the same capo fit acoustic and classical guitars?

Do not assume so. Compare fingerboard curve, neck width, jaw opening and pad profile, then test the sample on the intended guitars.

Why does a capo make a guitar sound out of tune?

Excessive or uneven clamp pressure can pull notes sharp. Compare tuning with and without the capo and agree an acceptable playing sample.

What should I check before buying capos with ivory decoration?

Confirm registration or exemption eligibility and import documents before ordering. The tariff attaches ivory and CITES controls; ask your customs broker to check the actual material.
