Sourcing graphite electrode nipples from China

Graphite electrode nipples from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant tariff lines, with no anti-dumping measure listed in the supplied snapshot. Classify by density and electrical resistance, then specify the thread against the electrode socket. Cambridge China Bridge sources graphite electrode nipples.

0% duty on graphite electrode nipples

Heading 8545 covers graphite and other carbon articles used for electrical purposes. This guide concerns the threaded nipples joining graphite furnace electrodes. The table includes the named nipple lines, the residual line for other carbon electrical articles and a matching electrode-body line. For the wider product family, see graphite electrodes and carbon brushes.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls on these lines. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

The named nipple lines distinguish density and electrical resistance. Obtain the factory's batch results and intended electrical use before choosing between them or the residual line. Your import declaration must include the commodity code. Confirm it using finding your commodity code, rather than copying the code for the electrode body.

Specify the nipple and its mating socket

Send the factory the electrode socket drawing and an approved mating sample. Specify nipple grade, diameter, length, thread pitch, thread form, machining tolerances and the required fit. A matching grade name alone does not establish that a replacement nipple fits the installed electrodes.

Agree limits for bulk density, electrical resistivity, flexural strength, thermal expansion and ash content. Ask for results traceable to the production lot and agree how sample testing will be performed. Use factory verification to check the maker's machining and testing capability.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative replacement-stock order: 40 graphite electrode nipples; values are illustrative under 8545 90 90 10, invoiced at £4,500 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,100. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,100, so it is £1,020. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Properties: compare the lot certificate with the purchase specification and arrange independent sample testing for density, resistivity and flexural strength.

Threads: gauge the machined threads and test-fit sampled nipples into representative electrode sockets. Check for chipped thread crests, cracks and damaged ends.

Traceability: match carton labels, lot references and test certificates; check the quantities and sizes received against the packing list.

Packing: inspect arrival damage, thread protection, moisture and movement inside cases. Solid wood packaging used for imports into Great Britain must meet the international phytosanitary wood-packaging standard. Include this requirement in the packing brief.

What goes wrong

A nipple can look correct but have the wrong thread or material properties. Poor fit, damaged threads or weak material can lead to loose joints or breakage in the furnace. Keep an approved mating sample and reject departures from the agreed drawing rather than accepting a supplier's claim that the size is equivalent.

Mixed lots make failures difficult to trace, while unprotected threads can arrive chipped despite intact outer cases. Record inspection results against each lot and photograph damage before unpacking further. Agree checks through quality inspection.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on graphite electrode nipples from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot shows 0% on the named nipple lines and the residual carbon electrical articles line. It lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures on them.

Which commodity code should I use for graphite electrode nipples?

The named lines are 8545 90 90 10 and 8545 90 90 15. Check density and electrical resistance against their descriptions; consider 8545 90 90 99 only when the named lines do not describe the goods.

Can I buy replacement nipples from a different electrode factory?

Check the socket drawing, thread dimensions and material properties first. Gauge and test-fit samples against your actual electrode sockets before accepting the production lot.

What should I check when graphite electrode nipples arrive?

Check lot certificates, dimensions, thread fit, cracks, chipped threads and packing damage. Keep the lot identity with the inspection record so any joint failure can be traced.
