Sourcing graphite earthing electrodes from China

Graphite earthing electrodes from China fall within the non-furnace electrode line of heading 8545, subject to classification, with a flat 0% UK duty and no listed trade remedy. Electrical installations and equipment must be safe; agree the electrode material and connection design before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources graphite earthing electrodes.

UK duty on graphite earthing electrodes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8545 covers graphite and other carbon articles for electrical purposes, with or without metal. For graphite earthing electrodes, the relevant starting point is 8545 19 00 00, other electrodes, rather than the furnace electrode lines. Confirm classification from the actual construction and intended function.

The supplied tariff snapshot records 0% duty for goods from China on this line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Import VAT is normally 20%. The table shows different electrode forms under the same commodity line, rather than separate tariff subheadings.

Give your customs broker the drawing, material description and intended earthing use, then confirm the commodity code. See the wider graphite electrodes and carbon brushes guide for other electrical carbon products.

Specify the graphite and conductor connection

Specify solid graphite or a graphite composite, including any binder, coating or embedded metal. Put dimensions, tolerances, density, electrical resistivity, mechanical strength and the connection detail on the drawing. Identify whether the electrode is supplied bare or with a conductor attached. Ask for batch test results and a sample of the actual connection.

Agree the installation method with the earthing designer: burial or driving, soil conditions, conductor material and the proposed backfill. Assess material resistivity separately from installed earth resistance. A factory measurement on a graphite sample does not demonstrate the performance of the completed earthing system.

HSE states that electrical installations and equipment must be safe. UK REACH generally applies to substances in articles as well as substances and mixtures. Obtain composition information for the graphite composite, binder and coating so your adviser can assess the applicable chemical obligations before sale in Great Britain.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 40 graphite earthing electrode rods, illustrative only under 8545 19 00 00, invoiced at £1,500 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,100. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,100, so it is £420. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match batch identification and test results to the agreed graphite grade, density, resistivity and strength; arrange independent sample testing where needed.

Geometry: measure rod dimensions, plate thickness, holes and connection features against the drawing; inspect edges and drilled areas for cracks and chips.

Connections: check conductor material, contact surfaces and attachment method; test sample connections for continuity and mechanical security against agreed acceptance criteria.

Packing: check individual protection, supported loads and batch identification; inspect arrivals for fractured graphite, damaged terminals and movement inside the packaging. See our quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

Problems to check for include a graphite composite substituted for the specified material, inconsistent resistivity, cracks around drilled connections and loose conductor attachments. Graphite can arrive intact externally while a connection has moved during transport. Photograph unpacking and retain samples from suspect batches.

A low resistance result on a factory sample can be mistaken for proof of satisfactory earthing at the site. Agree who will assess the complete installation and how acceptance will be demonstrated before ordering. Keep furnace electrode reports separate from evidence for the earthing product actually supplied.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on graphite earthing electrodes from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot records 0% duty under 8545 19 00 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm that the actual product belongs in this non-furnace electrode line.

Which specifications should I send the Chinese factory?

Send the graphite composition, dimensions, tolerances, resistivity, strength, conductor material and connection drawing. Describe the installation method and request batch test results.

Does a graphite test report prove the installed earth resistance?

No. Material resistivity and installed earth resistance describe different things. Site conditions, electrode arrangement and connections need separate assessment by the earthing designer.

Can I use a furnace electrode certificate for an earthing electrode?

Ask for evidence matching the earthing electrode's material, dimensions and connection. A certificate describing a furnace electrode does not establish suitability for your earthing design.
