UK duty on empty olive-oil bottles
Heading 7010 covers glass containers used to convey or pack goods, including empty olive-oil bottles. Bottle classification depends on nominal capacity and whether the glass is colourless or coloured. For the wider packaging family, see glass sauce bottles.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all bottle lines selected here carry 0% ordinary duty for goods from China, with 52.97% residual provisional anti-dumping duty. Named exporters may qualify for lower rates with the signed invoice declaration. The snapshot lists no suspensions or countervailing duty for these lines. Imports are subject to registration, and a guarantee is required during the provisional remedy. Ask your customs broker to confirm registration handling, exporter eligibility and security before shipment.
Confirm the commodity code using the bottle drawing, nominal capacity, glass colour and packaging use. The illustrative order uses a line with a plain percentage ordinary duty; its provisional anti-dumping security must be considered separately.

Specify the bottle, neck and oil-contact parts
Specify glass colour, nominal and brimful capacities, intended fill level, bottle weight, dimensions, neck finish and label panel. Identify the exact cap, liner and pourer, including their materials. Approve production samples assembled with the closures you intend to use, and trial them on your filling and capping equipment.
If you package food yourself, you must use packaging suitable for food use. Ask for evidence covering the supplied bottle and oil-contact components, matched to your oil, storage conditions and intended contact time. Keep supplier details, batch records and supporting documents with the approved sample. Agree dividers, mouth protection and pallet restraint.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 500 empty coloured glass olive-oil bottles; provisional anti-dumping security is additional under 7010 90 53 00, invoiced at £500 free on board, with £500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £1,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £1,000, so it is £200. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Glass: inspect delivered bottles for chipped rims, cracks, sharp seams, loose fragments and contamination inside; compare colour and dimensions with the approved sample.
Capacity and filling: measure nominal and brimful capacities against the specification; trial filling, bottle stability and label application.
Closure: fit the actual cap, liner and pourer to bottles from different cartons; check seating, leakage and pouring after handling.
Packing and records: open delivered cartons for breakage and rubbing; check dividers, mouth protection, batch identification and supporting documents.

What goes wrong
A matching bottle silhouette can hide a different neck finish. Caps then seat unevenly, pourers work loose or oil leaks during transport. Approve the bottle and closure together, and repeat the fit and leakage checks on production samples.
Mixed glass shades, uneven label panels and damaged rims can make a batch unsuitable for filling or sale. Hold affected stock for investigation and document the defects before agreeing replacement. Budgeting only for ordinary duty also overlooks the provisional anti-dumping guarantee.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on glass olive-oil bottles from China?
The selected bottle lines carry 0% ordinary duty, plus 52.97% residual provisional anti-dumping duty. Eligible named exporters may qualify for lower rates; confirm any signed invoice declaration requirement with your customs broker. Provisional security is required.
What food-contact evidence should I request?
Request evidence for the supplied bottle, cap liner and pourer under your intended oil-contact conditions. Match documents to the materials and batch; packaging used to pack food must be suitable for food use.
Will my existing caps fit Chinese olive-oil bottles?
Check the neck drawing and trial your actual caps, liners and pourers on production samples. A similar bottle shape does not establish closure fit; check seating, leakage and pouring.
How should I check bottles when they arrive?
Open cartons from across the delivery. Inspect rims and interiors, measure capacity, trial closures and filling, and record breakage, shade differences and batch details before releasing stock.
