Sourcing glass-reinforced PP sheets from China
Glass-fibre-reinforced polypropylene sheets from China normally carry 6% UK duty under 3921 90 60 90. Conditional relief can reduce duty to 0%; it is not a general rate for reinforced sheets. Check composition and the intended use before claiming relief. Cambridge China Bridge sources glass-fibre-reinforced polypropylene sheets.

6% normal duty, with conditional relief
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3921 covers other plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip. For glass-fibre-reinforced polypropylene sheets, the relevant candidate line is 3921 90 60 90, other sheet of addition polymerisation products. The table shows specification variants sharing that line, rather than separate tariff classifications. See the wider foam sheet and laminates guide.
The supplied tariff record shows 6% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no attached import control on this line. It also lists 0.00 % suspensions, including specified ion-exchange membranes and authorised use for manufacturing offshore wind turbine rotor blades. These are conditional provisions. Goods imported under authorised use must fulfil the prescribed purpose; ask your customs broker to confirm whether the exact sheets qualify.
Send the broker the resin composition, glass-fibre content, reinforcement structure, layer construction and intended use before confirming the commodity code. Do not select a polyester or epoxy sheet code merely because its description mentions glass fibre. Use the normal rate for budgeting until relief is confirmed, and follow the import duty and VAT guide for the calculation.

Specify the polypropylene matrix and reinforcement
Specify the polypropylene grade, virgin or recycled content, glass-fibre content by weight, chopped or continuous reinforcement, and fibre orientation. Describe every facing, coating and backing. Agree sheet dimensions, thickness tolerance, flatness, surface finish and colour against an approved sample.
Define the application before choosing performance tests. Agree bending and impact checks, service temperature, and a cutting or forming trial using your tooling. Where directional reinforcement is supplied, identify the direction on the drawing and packaging. Ask for batch test results rather than relying on a generic resin datasheet.
Ask for the additive and flame-retardant declaration and a UK REACH Candidate List assessment. Inclusion on that list brings supplier obligations; establish which apply before supplying the sheets. Use testing and certification support to agree evidence for the exact grade and intended application.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: A trial consignment of reinforced sheets for a small fabricator, illustrative under 3921 90 60 90, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £3,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,200. Duty at 6% is £912. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £16,112, so it is £3,222.40. Import taxes total £4,134.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £912 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Composition: match resin identity, glass-fibre content and reinforcement structure to the approved sample and batch report; use an agreed laboratory check where composition affects acceptance.
Dimensions: measure thickness across the sheet, length, width and flatness; compare sheet mass and visible fibre orientation with the agreed specification.
Surface and processing: check for exposed fibres, dry patches, voids, scratches and layer separation; cut or form a retained sample and inspect the resulting edges.
Packing and traceability: check flat support, edge protection, batch labels and matching documents before dispatch and on arrival. Record findings through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
The description “glass reinforced” leaves important differences unresolved. A supplier may change fibre content, reinforcement direction or recycled resin content while keeping the same product name. Sheets can then behave differently during cutting, forming or loading. Approve the complete construction and require agreement before material substitutions.
Warped sheets, damaged edges and hidden layer separation can make an otherwise acceptable batch unusable. Compare arrival samples with the retained approval sample and trial them before releasing the batch into production. A report for another thickness, facing or additive package does not establish the performance of the sheets delivered.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on glass-reinforced polypropylene sheets from China?
The supplied tariff record shows 6% under 3921 90 60 90. Conditional suspensions can give 0.00 %, but eligibility needs checking. No anti-dumping or countervailing measure is recorded on this line.
Does glass reinforcement make the sheets duty free?
Do not assume so. The normal recorded rate is 6%. The listed suspensions have product or authorised-use conditions; ask your broker to check the exact construction and use.
What should I specify before ordering reinforced polypropylene sheets?
Specify resin grade, recycled content, glass-fibre content and structure, fibre direction, dimensions, flatness and facings. Agree performance checks and a cutting or forming trial.
What chemical evidence should I request for reinforced sheets?
Request the additive and flame-retardant declaration and a UK REACH Candidate List assessment for the supplied grade. Establish the applicable supplier obligations before sale.
