UK duty on glass decanters

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the selected decanter lines under heading 7013 carried 10% ordinary duty on goods from China. These are table or kitchen glassware lines other than drinking glasses. The supplied snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for these lines.

The tariff attaches cat and dog fur import and export controls: imports and exports of that fur and products made from it are banned, including goods from China. Check any fur-containing accessories. It also attaches a cultural-object export licence measure; ask your customs broker to confirm its relevance if you later export the goods.

Confirm the commodity code using glass composition, toughening and whether the glass is gathered by hand or mechanically. Do not classify from the word crystal alone. For the wider heading and drinking-glass products, see wine glasses.

Specify the bowl, neck and stopper

Write down the intended drink and whether the decanter is for serving or storage. Specify glass composition, usable and brim capacity, overall dimensions, base stability, neck opening, rim finish and decoration. Approve a production-material sample and agree acceptable bubbles, mould seams and colour variation.

Food-contact regulations cover articles expected to contact food and materials such as printing inks. For a decanter intended for drinks, include the glass, decoration and any stopper seal in your evidence request. Ask for reports matching the supplied materials and intended contact conditions; testing and certification support can help scope that request.

For stoppered designs, agree insertion depth, removal effort and whether the stopper is individually matched or interchangeable. Try pouring, draining, cleaning and drying the sample. Agree the cleaning instructions and verify any dishwasher claim before putting it on the packaging.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 500 mechanically gathered glass decanters; illustrative order and values under 7013 49 99 00, invoiced at £11,000 free on board, with £3,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £14,200. Duty at 10% is £1,420. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,620, so it is £3,124. Import taxes total £4,544; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,420 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Glass and rim: on arrival, check for cracks, chips, sharp edges, embedded particles and visible distortion; compare colour and finish with the approved sample.

Capacity and pouring: measure the agreed capacities, check base stability and pour from sampled decanters to identify drips or awkward handling.

Stopper and cleaning: check fit across sampled bodies, inspect contact surfaces and seals, and confirm the interior can be cleaned, drained and dried.

Packing and identity: open cartons to check dividers, neck protection and separately secured stoppers; match item and batch references to the order and reports. Agree these checks in your inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A showroom sample can hide production problems: an uneven base rocks, the pouring lip dribbles, the neck traps cleaning residue or a stopper jams after washing. Check production samples using the proposed cleaning method and compare their fit and finish with the retained sample.

Loose stoppers can strike the bowl in transit, while tight carton partitions press against the neck. Check the packed product after a handling trial. A report for undecorated glass does not demonstrate the performance of a different decorated or sealed design; ask the laboratory which supplied components its report covers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on glass decanters from China?

The selected tableware lines carried 10% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

What food-contact evidence should I ask the factory for?

Ask for material details and reports matching the glass, decoration and stopper seal supplied, with contact conditions suited to the intended drink and serving or storage use.

Should decanter stoppers be interchangeable?

Specify this explicitly. If stoppers are individually matched, agree how each stays with its body during packing and delivery; test interchangeability if replacements are needed.

How do I check decanters for breakage on arrival?

Open sampled cartons and inspect the rim, neck, base and stopper contact surfaces. Record damage alongside carton condition and check whether partitions and stopper restraints stayed in place.
