UK duty on game controllers

Heading 9504 covers video game consoles and machines, payment-operated games and table or parlour games. For a console controller, discuss 9504 50 00 00 with your broker; for arcade control assemblies, distinguish parts from complete machines. The table includes complete-machine lines for comparison, rather than treating every line as a handheld-controller code. See the arcade-machine guide for the wider heading.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 9 December 2026, the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or import controls for these lines. It does attach a cultural-goods export licence measure; confirm its application with your broker if you later export the goods. Import VAT is separate from customs duty.

Confirm the commodity code using the controller's intended host, functions, connections and whether it is a complete controller or a replacement assembly. Send photographs and the technical specification. Do not assume that cables, charging accessories and replacement components all share the controller's classification.

Specify compatibility, controls and firmware

Name the supported consoles or computers, operating systems, connection method and required receiver. Specify stick sensing, neutral position, dead zones, trigger travel, button layout, vibration, motion controls and audio functions where fitted. Agree how each feature will be demonstrated on the intended host. Keep an approved sample and record its firmware version.

For wireless models sold in Great Britain, the importer must not place radio equipment on the market unless it meets the essential requirements. Confirm with Trading Standards which electromagnetic compatibility requirements and importer obligations apply to the model. Arrange testing and certification for the finished configuration, including its receiver and supplied accessories.

Under hazardous-substance rules, individual products must show the importer's name or trademark and a contactable address on the product or packaging. Check the artwork against this requirement. Electrical-equipment producers must register annually; confirm your producer status before selling. For rechargeable models, agree the cell identity, charging behaviour and battery-compartment construction with the factory.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 500 game controllers, illustrative only, subject to classification confirmation under 9504 50 00 00, invoiced at £6,500 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,500, so it is £1,500. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Compatibility: connect delivered controllers to the agreed hosts; test pairing, reconnection, sleep recovery and wired operation where specified.

Inputs: check stick centring, drift, dead zones, full travel, button registration and simultaneous inputs. Test triggers, vibration and motion functions against the approved sample.

Construction and charging: inspect housing seams, grip finish, loose parts, cable strain relief and connectors. Check charging behaviour against the agreed procedure and inspect for swelling or damage.

Arrival and identification: open packed cartons, inspect crushed housings and connector damage, count receivers and cables, and match model labels, firmware and documents to the order. Define sampling and acceptance through the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A controller can pair successfully while losing vibration, audio or trigger functions on the buyer's intended platform. Test the advertised features in actual games and menus. Write the compatibility matrix into the order rather than accepting a general claim that the controller works with computers and consoles.

Stick drift, sticking buttons, intermittent sockets and substituted receivers can appear after an acceptable sample. Freeze the component list and firmware, require approval before substitutions, and retain inspection records. Compare arrival stock with the approved sample before releasing it for sale.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on game controllers from China?

The selected lines carry 0% duty from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duties or suspensions. Confirm the controller's exact commodity code before declaring it.

Do wireless game controllers need UK compliance checks?

Yes. For Great Britain, importers must not place radio equipment on the market unless it meets the essential requirements. Plan the assessment around the finished controller and receiver.

How do I check game-controller compatibility?

Test the agreed hosts, connection modes and firmware. Check buttons, triggers, vibration, audio, motion functions and reconnection individually rather than accepting pairing as proof.

How can I reduce stick-drift problems?

Specify stick sensing, centring, dead zones and the inspection method. Retain an approved sample and check production controllers for unintended input and uneven travel.
