Normally 14% duty on frozen sugar snap peas

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 0710 covers vegetables frozen uncooked or after steaming or boiling in water. Sugar snap peas supplied as frozen pea pods fall within the peas line, 0710 21 00 00. The table also includes mixtures and separately supplied ingredients for buyers assembling sugar snap pea blends.

The peas line carries 14% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty shown in the supplied tariff data. A restricted 0% suspension exists for specified thin pea pods. Do not assume ordinary sugar snap peas qualify: ask your customs broker to check the variety, pod thickness and intended use against the suspension conditions.

The tariff attaches an organic-products import control. An organic importer must be based and certified in the UK. For organic orders, obtain the inspection certificate issued by the exporter’s control body and confirm the consignment requirements with your broker. Confirm the commodity code using the product specification and preparation method. See the wider frozen peas guide for related pea products.

Specify the edible pod and cooked texture

Specify sugar snap peas by variety and an approved sample, rather than accepting a generic description of green peas or mangetout. Agree whole or cut pods, trimming and string removal, pod size, seed development, colour and acceptable broken or blemished pods. Compare cooked samples for sweetness, tenderness and fibrous strings using the preparation method your customers will use.

Agree blanching, individual freezing, pack format, net weight, storage instructions and remaining shelf life on arrival. Plan the cold chain at -18°C or colder with temperature records. Confirm applicable GB pesticide maximum residue levels with the relevant food authority and request lot-linked laboratory reports. Before printing, confirm food-business registration and English labelling requirements with the relevant authority, covering the food name, net weight, storage instructions and UK address.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative only: 5 tonnes of frozen sugar snap peas for a food wholesaler under 0710 21 00 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £3,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,500. Duty at 14% is £3,010. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £24,510, so it is £4,902. Import taxes total £7,912; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £3,010 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Pod identity: compare sampled pods with the approved sugar snap pea sample; check trimming, strings, maturity, blemishes and breakage.

Cooked quality: prepare a sample using the agreed method and assess tenderness, sweetness, fibrous pods and colour.

Cold chain and weight: check arrival core temperature, logger records, clumping, excess ice, sealed bags and net weight.

Batch evidence: match carton and bag lot codes to residue reports and shipping documents; check labels and screen for stones, stems and plastic. Arrange quality inspection around these checks.

What goes wrong

A supplier may substitute flat mangetout or overmature pods for the rounded, tender sugar snap sample. Poor trimming leaves strings, while unsuitable blanching can leave pods tough or soft. Write the acceptance criteria into the order and retain the approved cooked sample as a comparison.

Clumping can indicate temperature abuse, and excess ice can conceal a short net weight. Record temperatures and photograph affected packs before accepting the load. A generic organic certificate should not replace checking the import paperwork for the shipment, and a supplier’s zero-duty claim should be checked against the restricted pea-pod suspension.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on frozen sugar snap peas from China?

Normally 14% under 0710 21 00 00. The supplied tariff data shows a restricted 0% suspension for specified thin pea pods, which should not be assumed to cover ordinary sugar snap peas.

Only budget for the suspension after your customs broker checks the variety, pod thickness and intended use against its conditions. A supplier calling the product pea pods is not enough.

Do frozen sugar snap peas need a health certificate?

Official guidance says fruit and vegetables do not normally need a health certificate. Ask your broker to check the exact shipment; organic inspection paperwork is a separate matter.

What should I check when frozen sugar snap peas arrive?

Check core temperature, logger records, net weight, excess ice, pod identity, strings and cooked texture. Match the shipped lot codes to the residue reports and inspect for foreign matter.
