Pineapple pieces, added sugar and mixtures

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 0811 covers frozen fruit and nuts, uncooked or cooked by steaming or boiling in water, with or without added sugar. Unsweetened frozen pineapple pieces under 0811 90 95 30 carry 14% duty from China, with an autonomous suspension to 0%. The suspension excludes mixtures, preparations and products made up of different components containing the fruit.

Sweetened pineapple under 0811 90 39 90 carries 20%. Where sugar content exceeds 13% by weight, 0811 90 19 90 carries 20% plus £7 per 100 kg. The selected lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The tariff attaches an organic import control: organic consignments need an inspection certificate. For imports from China into Great Britain, the exporter’s control body in the country of export issues it.

Give your customs broker the complete recipe, added-sugar declaration, measured sugar content and product description before confirming the commodity code and suspension eligibility. The mixture row is relevant only where the goods classify there. Confirm with HMRC or your customs broker whether plain frozen fruit sold as food qualifies for zero-rated VAT; check the exact product using the duty and VAT guide. For the wider heading, see the frozen mango chunks guide.

Specify the pineapple cut and intended use

Specify variety, ripeness, chunk dimensions and tolerance, yellow colour, sweetness, acidity and the permitted amount of fibrous core. State whether pieces must remain individually separate or may be block frozen. Agree limits for peel, eyes, bruising, crushed pieces and foreign matter against an approved sample.

State whether the chunks are intended for cooking, drinks or consumption after thawing. Agree batch sampling and pesticide, contaminant and microbiological testing with the laboratory. Confirm applicable food safety and traceability requirements for imported frozen fruit with the relevant food safety authority. A health certificate is not normally needed for fruit and vegetable imports, but check the current higher-risk food list before shipment.

Agree bag and carton weights, seals, batch identification, storage instructions and temperature records. For a product sold as quick-frozen, confirm with the relevant food safety authority whether storage at -18°C or colder after thermal stabilisation, with brief transport rises no warmer than -15°C, meets the applicable requirements.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5 tonnes of unsweetened frozen pineapple chunks under 0811 90 95 30, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,800. Duty at 14% is £3,052. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £24,852, so it is £4,970.40. Import taxes total £8,022.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £3,052 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Fruit: compare chunk dimensions, colour, core fibres, peel, eyes and crushed pieces with the approved sample; assess flavour and texture after controlled thawing.

Cold chain: check core temperature at loading and arrival, temperature-logger records, clumping, ice build-up and damaged packaging.

Batch evidence: match laboratory reports and batch references to the packed goods; review pesticide, contaminant and microbiological results against the agreed specification.

Packaging: check seals, net weight, batch identification and storage instructions. For organic goods, match the inspection certificate to the consignment. Use the inspection guide to agree the checks before dispatch.

What goes wrong

A sample can contain tender, evenly cut flesh while production contains hard core, peel fragments and irregular pieces. Warm loading or interrupted refrigeration can leave clumped fruit with excessive drip and soft texture after thawing. Inspect drawn production samples rather than relying on the supplier’s display sample.

Added sugar or a mixed-fruit recipe can change the classification and remove suspension eligibility. An organic claim without the consignment certificate can also disrupt clearance. Confirm the recipe and documents before shipment, and hold batches with unexplained temperature excursions or mismatched test reports for assessment.
