Frozen jellyfish: 0% UK duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 0308 covers aquatic invertebrates other than crustaceans and molluscs. Frozen jellyfish of Rhopilema species falls under 0308 30 50 00 and carries 0% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is recorded for this line. The table includes neighbouring lines for classification comparison.

The frozen-jellyfish line carries veterinary and organic import controls. For food entering Great Britain, confirm country and establishment approval, the applicable health certificate, advance notification through IPAFFS and the designated border control post with the port health authority. Confirm the Common Health Entry Document with your broker. For organic food from China, confirm with the relevant organic authority whether a certificate of inspection is required for each consignment. These border arrangements concern Great Britain; check Northern Ireland separately.

Confirm scientific species, frozen condition and processing with your broker using our commodity code guide. Ask for separate classification advice on cooked, seasoned or otherwise prepared jellyfish. Other jellyfish lines carry 10%; see the salted jellyfish guide for related purchases.

Specify the cut, treatment and usable weight

Specify scientific species, bell or tentacle cuts, cut dimensions, cleaned condition and whether the product was salted before freezing. Request the complete treatment and additive declaration. Agree frozen packing format, glaze or surrounding liquid, usable weight after thawing and draining, and the preparation needed before eating.

Keep an approved sample and a written thawing, draining and preparation method. Compare texture, saltiness and intact cuts after that preparation. For organic orders, the certificate of inspection is issued by the exporter's control body in the country of export; ask the supplier to arrange it before dispatch.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative hypothetical order: 2 tonnes of frozen jellyfish under 0308 30 50 00, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £17,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £17,500, so it is £3,500. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the scientific species, processing description, factory approval details and batch markings across the product, invoice, packing list and health documents.

Weight: thaw and drain samples using the agreed method, then compare usable weight with the specification. Solid foods packed in liquid or an ice glaze must show the drained net weight.

Cold chain: review transport temperature records and check arrival temperatures against the agreed storage specification. Look for damaged seals, leakage, thawing signs and excessive ice.

Treatment and texture: compare salt, declared additives, cut integrity and prepared texture with the approved sample. Review batch laboratory results before accepting the stock; our inspection guide explains how to arrange checks.

What goes wrong

A supplier may describe salted jellyfish stored frozen simply as frozen jellyfish. Give the broker the full processing history before choosing a code. A tariff entry does not establish import permission: check approval for the exact product and establishment before placing the order, and resolve conflicting certificate descriptions before loading.

Glaze or surrounding liquid can conceal a shortfall in usable product. Cuts can arrive fragmented or become soft after preparation, while inconsistent salt treatment changes the kitchen's preparation work. Agree acceptance criteria using prepared samples, and record arrival condition before moving stock into storage.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on frozen jellyfish from China?

Frozen jellyfish under 0308 30 50 00 carries 0% duty. Other jellyfish lines carry 10%. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension for the frozen line.

Can I import frozen jellyfish from any Chinese factory?

Do not assume permission from the tariff code. Confirm that the exporting country and establishment are approved for the exact food product with the port health authority before ordering.

Does frozen jellyfish need import health documents?

Confirm the applicable health certificate and Common Health Entry Document with your broker. Ask the port health authority whether your fishery consignment needs advance notification through IPAFFS and a designated border control post route.

How should I compare frozen jellyfish samples?

Compare species, cut, salt treatment, declared additives and usable weight after the same thawing and draining method. Assess texture after the preparation your kitchen or customer will actually use.
